Adventures in Wellington

November 01, 2016. We are almost at the 10 year anniversary of our move here to New Zealand, and I've been wanting to write some posts reflecting on what we've learned and how we've settled in here. Mostly, the posts are just floating around in my head - we'll see how many of them I'll actually write down! So, we'll start with Halloween 2016. You'll note I didn't add a picture at the top of this post. Why? Wellthere's really nothing to take a picture of, sadly. Labels: Life in Welly. January 03, 2015.

Adventures in Wellington: New Year's 2014/2015

http://dawnanddarren.blogspot.com/2015/01/new-years-20142015.html

January 01, 2015. Today is the first day of 2015. A new year always brings a sense of hope and excitement, and today even more-so because the weather was simply stunning. Most of the 'backwards' seasons feel weird to me, but I do enjoy a beautiful summer New Year's day. Like most years, we didn't make any advanced plans for New Year's eve this (last? Darren and I had a relatively quiet evening filled with beer, pizza, video games and the struggle to stay awake until midnight. We made it though, and c...

Adventures in Wellington: Here's a Tip

http://dawnanddarren.blogspot.com/2015/01/heres-tip.html

January 13, 2015. There's a post that has been floating around my head for a while - and I promise I will eventually put 'pen to paper' - that is a follow-up to "To Be an Expat". In it, I will explore why we still live in New Zealand and the likelihood of us ever moving back to the US (or to another country). Stay tuned! The employer is shifting their duty. To pay workers fairly on to customers. What other job would allow this? Why are minimum wages allowed to be so low for waitresses/waiters in the US?

Adventures in Wellington: 8 Years

http://dawnanddarren.blogspot.com/2014/11/8-years.html

November 28, 2014. I started this blog post a couple of weeks ago – it was to be a reflection of the past 8 years and what we have learned about New Zealand and the Kiwi culture, especially as it is reflected through the language. However, that version is on a now-bricked flash drive. Darren is desperately trying to fix whatever I have done to that (not backed up) tiny piece of technology. In the meantime, I will think (and write) about how today is Thanksgiving. Labels: Life in Welly. How to speak Kiwi.

Adventures in Wellington: To Be an Expat

http://dawnanddarren.blogspot.com/2014/12/to-be-expat.html

December 26, 2014. To Be an Expat. The word I associate most with being an expat is "lonely". We took this leap of faith together, knowing that it would be just us for a while in our new homeland. And we were also very fortunate to have my friends Darrel and Merrin here in Wellington - they welcomed us on our first day, and have been a constant presence since. The loneliness is worse at the holidays (not too unexpected, though, right? Labels: Life in Welly. I miss you guys. We really miss you too, Viraj.

Adventures in Wellington: How to Speak Kiwi: The Sequel

http://dawnanddarren.blogspot.com/2015/01/how-to-speak-kiwi-sequel.html

January 03, 2015. How to Speak Kiwi: The Sequel. Way back in 2007, I wrote a blog post on " How to Speak Kiwi. I see that the post still gets quite a few views, so I thought I'd finally write an update. Eight years into this adventure, I still very much have my American accent. It is not really region-specific, except for the few times I drag out the "y'all" or say "Aunt" the Yankee way. Darren still has his accent too, although he (and many people in the US) seem to think it has faded quite a bit. Speak...

The Front Portch: One man's trash is another man's treasure...

http://thefrontportch.blogspot.com/2009/06/one-mans-trash-is-another-mans-treasure.html

Sunday, June 7, 2009. One man's trash is another man's treasure. A big thank you goes out to all of the people who came by and bought all of my junk yesterday! It amazes me what this lens can do! Those should be made into note cards. Ya know, slap em on the front of a blank white card and sell em to your friends for cheap. I love them! June 8, 2009 at 8:48 AM. Friday, May 29, 2009. From a crib to a cot. In preparation to move Alexander and his classmates to the toddler room, they have started taking their naps on cots rather than in cribs. much to my surprise, Alexander seems to be taking naps on the cot very well. The Front Portch: June 2009

http://thefrontportch.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Thursday, June 25, 2009. I am working on skill building to improve my photography and I think today's session went well. I spent the afternoon at Gail's and worked on lighting and composition with Alexander and Wesley. I got a few shots that I was pretty happy with. Afterward, we took the boys outside for some fun with the water hose. Once again, I was able to find several 4 leaf clovers in Gail's backyard without any trouble. i even came across a 5-leaf clover! And baby makes three: A very merry Christmas!

http://gailandgreg.blogspot.com/2009/12/very-merry-christmas.html

And baby makes three. Friday, December 25, 2009. A very merry Christmas! It was a happy happy day at our house! Wesley must have been a very good boy this year, because he made out like a bandit! Santa brought him a pony, Grandma and Opa brought him a train table and Grandma and Pop Pop gave him a huge fire house. Mommy and Daddy got him the required socks and underwear - which will be put to good use as Wesley has been working on potty training. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A very merry Christmas!

Vier Monate in Wellington / New Zealand: Zeitumstellung - oh weh!

http://welliwood.blogspot.com/2008/04/zeitumstellung-oh-weh.html

Vier Monate in Wellington / New Zealand. Mittwoch, 2. April 2008. Zeitumstellung - oh weh!

Friday, March 28, 2008. 35 Days To Go! We are getting close to to the 30 day marker and everything is coming together perfectly, with the exception of the snow that keeps falling in my parents backyard. Have a drink with Smiths and the Biggins! See everyone very soon! Love - Dawn and Dave. Dawn and Daves Wedding.
