Dawson Station: Modeling Philosophy
http://dawson-station.blogspot.com/2009/01/gensis-of-dawston-station.html
Based on Hull-Oakes Sawmill. Four square feet of N-scale model railroad fun- - - - - - - -. After years and years of wanting to do a model railroad layout, I came to several conclusions:. 1) I would never have the space. To do even a modest HO size layout. 2) I would never have enough money. To do even a modest size layout. 3) I would never have enough time. To build a modest size layout. There is actually a group that does "micro layouts". Now the real question is what can you do in four square feet?

Based on Hull-Oakes Sawmill. Four square feet of N-scale model railroad fun- - - - - - - -. Motive Power (with new photos). I had obtained a set of MicroScale decals several years ago, but hadn't been brave enough to try a conversion. The gift of the "DARE" car. And the subsequent upcoming video shoot was enough to spark me into action. (The engine was not part of the display at the Model Logger's Conference. The first step was disassembling the engine:. Dawson Station: Photo Tour (January '10)
http://dawson-station.blogspot.com/2010/01/photo-tour.html
Based on Hull-Oakes Sawmill. Four square feet of N-scale model railroad fun- - - - - - - -. Photo Tour (January '10). Entering the layout from the left, the train arrives from Alpine Junction with the caboose in the lead and the engine pushing. Just before the mill is a small farmhouse on a hill. A number of workers built their homes near the mill using lumber in lieu of wages. The tracks cross a creek which runs under the mill site. The lunch shack overlooks the tracks. See some additional details.
Dawson Station: Historic Loads

Based on Hull-Oakes Sawmill. Four square feet of N-scale model railroad fun- - - - - - - -. Hull-Oakes has survived by cutting large diameter Douglas Fir trees for many special projects. Here are a couple of examples (click to get full size):. The entire staff and some family turned out for this 1964 photo. railnerd: Building the 3-way turnout
http://railnerd.blogspot.com/2015/02/building-3-way-turnout.html
Ramblings about model railroad technology. February 7, 2015. Building the 3-way turnout. A productive modeler once told me: "Try to work on your railroad every day, even if it is only for a few minutes.". Taking that to heart, I decided to embark on the something I had been putting off for a few months: building the 3-way switch for the China Basin ferry dock. I started with a set of paper FastTracks templates ( http:/ www.handlaidtrack.com/Fast-Tracks-Printable-Track-Templates-s/11.htm. Bay Area PCR/SIG...

Ramblings about model railroad technology. September 28, 2014. Added a quick coat of paint over the black primer to Robert's SLA phone booths:. Look forward to installing these line side next Friday. September 27, 2014. Got a chance to add a few more layers of weathering, touched up some of the metallic details, and took a couple of shots before packing it in for the night. I'm really happy with the way this is looking— next step will be detailing and adding the pilot house. September 15, 2014. The final...

Ramblings about model railroad technology. August 2, 2015. Was away from home for a bit, then came back to a very busy work week. Taking some "time off" from a project is often a good thing— it makes you appreciate hobby time even more. Today, I had a chance to test all those painting experiments from a few weeks ago on the apron:. I'm pretty happy so far, but have a LOT more to paint. Bay Area PCR/SIGs Meet Jan. 27-29. railnerd: Weekend Update
http://railnerd.blogspot.com/2015/06/weekend-update.html
Ramblings about model railroad technology. June 29, 2015. Had some time over the weekend to continue working on the ferry dock. With all the turnouts built, it was now time to focus on the "easy" track. I've become quite fond of the FastTracks "plain old track" jig for making straight track— so it was time to try using it to make the straight section of the pier. I started by making a simple section, then adding my longer PCB ties to the newly constructed rigid track:. Robert's Vasona Branch Blog.

Ramblings about model railroad technology. January 5, 2015. The next phase of the ferry dock was building the piling walls along the inside edges of the dock. In a departure from the plastic construction I had been using to build the trestle sections, I decided to try my hand with using real wood to represent wood. First, I stained 3/16" hardwood dowels using thinned Vallejo Model Color 70-822 German Black Brown:. Here's a better look at the progress so far (with the barge for a reference):. Well we had ...

Ramblings about model railroad technology. November 30, 2014. It has been a while since the last post, so I thought I'd share an update on my China Basin project. A few weeks ago, I had a few hours to play with the Epilog laser cutter at TechShop. San Jose. My first attempts at laser cutting after a year or two away from the machine served as an opportunity to re-learn the practical limits of laser board on the heavily used machines. While the model was sturdy, it looked a bit too "beefy" for my taste...
