BAB is a premium screen printing and supply company serving the Los Angeles area, and in 2012 they decided that a logo overhaul would help legitimize their business. Being that they were a new business, I wanted to give them a professional-looking mark that was rooted in their unique business, but wouldn’t be questioned if they decided to expand into other fields in the future (which, coincidentally, they did).

Iron Chef had a variety of logos for different mediums but wanted one central logo, especially for use on products. Using their original thick, angular logo as a starting point, I created a new, more uniform wordmark for universal use. I kept the mark bold and harsh to reflect the gravitas of the brand and tossed in a few “knife slices”–precision cooking in logo form. I then delivered Iron Chef a basic brand style guide, with all the essentials to ensure consistency across all public-facing materials.

After speaking with the founder and coming to understand the product more, I realized that his intense passion for Shapes wasn’t translating to investors because the brand’s own story hadn’t been solidified yet. Why was this a better way to learn music? What need did it fulfill? How did it work? What was the perceived market?

Los Angeles-based art collective Looked Like Laughing was releasing a poetry collection in conjunction with a live event and needed promotional and published materials designed. For the publication I focused primarily on precise layout and typography, allowing the work to speak for itself, while the accompanying poster built on this look in a more visceral way.
