Building a Streaker dinghy from plans. July 9, 2014. Decking – step one. I started decking with the angled side decks. The plans give shapes which need considerable trimming to suit. My first step was to adjust them for length – cautiously cutting and sanding away to give a nice tight fit. Then I placed them in position with an overlap on the lower edge. This let me mark the panel where it met the side bulkhead. I then trimmed the angled deck panel to fit. Cannot upload pictures for some reason today!

Building a Streaker dinghy from plans. July 7, 2014. When the decking is complete there is a further capping piece giving a maximum of 50mm width. When I turn the boat over I will need to level the underside of the gunwale – I suspect by a combination of planing and filling. The pull saw is not good for cutting the thicker ply so the jig saw has been earning its keep. Each bulkhead needs complex cuttings out to accommodate the keelson and slots to enable invisible joining to the side deck. Building a Streaker dinghy from plans. October 28, 2013. My plan – use a sharp normal pencil. Use meter rule for distances up to 1000mm and a tape measure thereafter. When using a graduated square mark beside the graduation – do not set the rule and mark at the end. We’ve been doing some small things here and there but last weekend finally got down to put some time into the build again. Building a Farr 3.7. When we initially had the idea of building a dinghy we realized that there would be quite a bit of things to learn. While each of us had a bit of experience in different skills that would come in handy, we were missing several of the basics. Of course “learning by doing” is what this project is all about, so that was just fine. Below I list the major resources we used. I cannot recommend The Gougeon Brothers on Boat Construction. Foils, rig, etc. Are my personal heros on this front!

Wood (missing material for frame doublers ATM! We are getting our wood from Robbins Timber and having two of the plywood sheets cut (CNC routing) by 4th Dimension. Both are in Bristol and work together, which makes our life easy. 6 sheets: 2500 x 1220 x 4 mm Robbins Elite Marine Plywood. 2 side bulkhead stringers.
