I'll Bite: November 2014
http://obsbite.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Cooking, Eating and Food-Loving in the Carolinas. Sunday, November 30, 2014. Sad news about a Matthews baker. As a fan of the former shop Jimmie's Sweets in Matthews, I was saddened to hear of the passing of Jimmie Williams on Nov. 25. Williams' shop, in the Matthews Station near the town hall, was known for great pound cakes, but I'll confess I was also a fan of his caramel crunch cookie, which had the most amazing icing. Thanks for the sweet memories, Jimmie. My condolences to his family. 1 1/2 teaspoo...

I'll Bite: October 2014
http://obsbite.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Cooking, Eating and Food-Loving in the Carolinas. Thursday, October 30, 2014. One Great . . . out-of-season tomato salad. If Dana can do it, anyone can do it. That's the message, anyway, in Dana Cowin's new cookbook "Mastering My Mistakes in the Kitchen: Learning to Cook With 65 Great Chefs and Over 100 Delicious Recipes" (Ecco, $34.99). From "Mastering My Mistakes in the Kitchen," by Dana Cowin. 1/4 cup plain whole-milk Greek yogurt. 1/2 easpoon kosher salt. 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish. Together t...

I'll Bite: September 2014
http://obsbite.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Cooking, Eating and Food-Loving in the Carolinas. Tuesday, September 30, 2014. One Great . . . pimento cheese soup. I'm trying to not feel jealous of food writer Perre Coleman Magness. When I met her on a recent food-writer trip to Memphis, she had just published her book "Pimento Cheese: The Cookbook" (St. Martin's Griffin, $21.99). Yes, that would be an entire book with variations of pimento cheese, an idea that has made every Southern writer I know slap his/her forehead with a "Dang! 3 cups whole milk.

I'll Bite: January 2015
http://obsbite.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Cooking, Eating and Food-Loving in the Carolinas. Friday, January 23, 2015. Are you ready for some football and barbecue? If the Super Bowl is coming in a week, people in the Sardis Road area of Charlotte know what that means: The smoke signals that alert them to the annual Boy Scout Troop 33 barbecue at Sardis Presbyterian Church. It happens Jan. 30-31, meaning you can stock up on barbecue just in time for Super Bowl parties. Want to put in an order? Posted by Kathleen Purvis. Wednesday, January 21, 2015.

I'll Bite: One Great . . . healthful sweet potato broth
http://obsbite.blogspot.com/2015/02/one-great-healthful-sweet-potato-broth.html
Cooking, Eating and Food-Loving in the Carolinas. Monday, February 9, 2015. One Great . . . healthful sweet potato broth. The mother/daughter team of Alice Randall and Caroline Randall Williams have a lovely book that landed on my desk, "Soul Food Love: Healthy Recipes Inspired By One Hundred Years of Cooking in a Black Family" (Clarkson Potter, $30). And now I get to use it all week to cook quinoa, kale and maybe even a sweet potato soup. This one will definitely find a spot in my regular rotation.

I'll Bite: December 2014
http://obsbite.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Cooking, Eating and Food-Loving in the Carolinas. Tuesday, December 16, 2014. One Great . . . easy slow cooker dessert. Last week, I shared a easy dessert for one that you make in a microwave. This week? An easy dessert for a crowd that you make in a slow cooker. Notice the theme here? Dessert, made easily. It’s the season when easy is the way to go. Slow Cooker Gingerbread Pudding Cake. 1 (145-ounce) package gingerbread mix. 2 1/4 cups water. 3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed. The water, brown sugar and...

I'll Bite: August 2014
http://obsbite.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Cooking, Eating and Food-Loving in the Carolinas. Tuesday, August 26, 2014. One Great . . . Asian chicken wrap. I was talking to a friend recently about fast meals and she seemed surprised by one of my favorite tips: Tortillas. Bread gets stale faster if you refrigerate it, but a pack of tortillas will keep for weeks in the refrigerator. And if you have tortillas on hand, you always have something easy you can make. 2 tablespoons vegetable oil. 1 (8-ounce) bag coleslaw mix. 2 cups shredded cooked chicken.

I'll Bite: A little ode to rock shrimp
http://obsbite.blogspot.com/2015/02/a-little-ode-to-rock-shrimp.html
Cooking, Eating and Food-Loving in the Carolinas. Wednesday, February 4, 2015. A little ode to rock shrimp. 2/4 UPDATE: A reader let me know that Fish On, at Afton Village, 5404 Village Dr. NW in Concord and the Charlotte Regional Farmers Market on Saturdays, has fresh rock shrimp for $17.95 a pound. The season is brief though. Get your scissors ready. OK, back to our regularly written blog post:. For years, we kept rock shrimp as our family secret. Then suddenly, the rock shrimp truck disappeared...

Cooking, Eating and Food-Loving in the Carolinas. Wednesday, February 11, 2015. Put these on your plate for the Wednesday feast. Go out to dinner on Valentine's Day? Why would we do that? It's so much more fun to skip the hype and the reservation fight to stay home and cook. Here's what we've got for your plate this week at www.charlotteobserver.com/food. For how she does it, and watch the video. I put together to see her in action. For making a great Valentine's dessert with Nutella. To go with those po...
