On the 2nd of January, after a 7 hour delay (I keep thinking of our delays as exceptions, but I’m starting to realize it’s the rule), our train pulled into Kolkata’s Howrah Station. On Christmas eve we set off across Varanasi on a cycle rickshaw to St. Mary's Catholic church, after many wrong turns we pulled up infront of what can only be described as. a fairground ride! We stared in shock for about 5 minutes before the neon cross seperated out from the mass of fairy lights, shooting stars, tinsel and bright colours (I swear I heard circus music too, but that might be my mind filling in what would have been appropriate!
