Find us on Facebook. Melanoma is a malignant cancer that starts from the pigment cells (melanocytes) of the skin. These cells are the cause of freckles and moles on the skin and produce the brown colour of a suntan. Melanoma can occur anywhere on the skin, even on the soles of the feet. Melanocytes in the eye, nervous system and mucous membranes (eg lining of the mouth and nasal passages) can also become cancerous. These types of melanoma are rare. Knowing how much her mum and sister, Jo and Jen, were irritated by odd/mismatched socks, Kate took to wearing them and mischievously breaking up matched pairs that Jo had carefully joined up! Wearing odd socks is a great way to celebrate and remember Kate's life. The Odd Sock week is a way of raising awareness about Melanoma prevention and identification, as well as much needed funds for research to find a cure for this deadly cancer. What a fantastic effort!

Because it is on the skin it is easy to diagnose early, and because it is closely associated with excessive sunlight exposure it is possible to prevent at least 80% of melanomas.
