Drinking Notes

What we drink and what we think. Sunday, February 27, 2011. Carlisle "Carlisle Vineyard" Zinfandel 2006. Wanted a good bottle after what felt like a long week. This delivered. Though I've found Carlisle's 06 zins less impressive than other vintages, I thought this was really good. Not too hot. Nice mix of fruit and earth (weird for a Zin) but thought it worked well. I think these are probably my favorite single vineyard Carlisle zins. Posted by Capitol Hill Wino. Rhys Alpine Vineyard Chardonnay 2007.

Drinking Notes: Rhys Alpine Vineyard Chardonnay 2007

http://drinkingnotes.blogspot.com/2011/02/rhys-alpine-vineyard-chardonnay-2007.html

What we drink and what we think. Sunday, February 27, 2011. Rhys Alpine Vineyard Chardonnay 2007. This was fantastic. Sea brine and citrus on the nose. Pretty zingy on the palate. Definitely some oak on the palate too, which strangely became more pronounced the second day. Ms. Capitol Hill Wino loved it. Wish we had more than one bottle left. Posted by Capitol Hill Wino. http://drinkingnotes.blogspot.com/2011/02/2007-carlisle-montafi-ranch-zinfandel.html

What we drink and what we think. Sunday, February 27, 2011. Carlisle Montafi Ranch Zinfandel 2007. Very good. Lots of fruit. A bit of heat. Probably better in six months but perhaps not worth the risk that the alcohol would overwhelm the fruit at that point. Bigger than most Carlisle Zins, which is saying something. What we drink and what we think. Sunday, February 27, 2011. Novy Santa Lucia Highlands Syrah 2007. First of four bottles we purchased on discount. Nice bigger California style Syrah. More dark fruit than pepper or spice. Not too hot which I appreciate. Posted by Capitol Hill Wino. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The toughest wine critics.

What we drink and what we think. Saturday, February 5, 2011. Pepiere Clos de Briords Muscadet 2009. Starting to enjoy muscadet a lot more. Chalky on the palate. This was great with whole fish and malay noodles for Chinese New Year. Posted by Capitol Hill Wino. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The toughest wine critics.

sow's ear: Porch Projects

http://sowsearcapitolhill.blogspot.com/2010/05/porch-projects.html

Rehabbing a capitol hill rowhouse. Friday, May 28, 2010. One kind of longer-term project we are working on is turning our back porch off the kitchen into a decent place to sit. Looks nice out here, right (if you sort of hold your hand up to cover the pile of stuff in the left corner)? Not only are we missing screens and shades, but most of the jalousie mechanisms are missing their crank handles and aren't properly riveted together in all the right places. So, we've got our work cut out for us out here.

sow's ear: Tiny Nursery: Potato Print Curtains!

http://sowsearcapitolhill.blogspot.com/2013/11/tiny-nursery-potato-print-curtains.html

Rehabbing a capitol hill rowhouse. Thursday, November 7, 2013. Tiny Nursery: Potato Print Curtains! I decided to make my own curtains from canvas drop cloths and paint. I first bought two large canvas drop cloths, then washed and dried them in case they had any kind of sizing or other treatment on them. I next carved some simple triangles into three potato halves, using regular kitchen knives and a couple of chisels. Potato stamps and Benjamin Moore Natura paint, to be used for both curtains and walls.

Rehabbing a capitol hill rowhouse. Tuesday, September 3, 2013. Porch Projects for Summer: A New and Improved Back Porch, now with Screens! Slowly but surely, through sacrificing/cannibalizing a few mechanisms and multiple trips to hardware stores and salvage yards to dig through bins of old screws, I got all but four (of 18 total! Our next order of business in our quest for a nice porch was to buy and install screens to keep out the mosquitoes. Because of the presence of many old screen clips attache...

sow's ear: Tiny Nursery: Closet Makeover

http://sowsearcapitolhill.blogspot.com/2013/11/tiny-nursery-closet-makeover.html

Rehabbing a capitol hill rowhouse. Wednesday, November 6, 2013. Tiny Nursery: Closet Makeover. When we moved into The Ear, we had two small, crappy closets. One was in our bedroom ( improved upon last year. And the other was in our office-turned-nursery. Both closets were used to run HVAC ducts, which is good for aesthetics but not for storage capacity. At some point over the summer (maybe during the bathroom addition? I decided on this unidentified yellow; the green was a little too. Picture Window temp...

Rehabbing a capitol hill rowhouse. Monday, November 11, 2013. Tiny Nursery: Ready and Waiting. I hung a couple of my own paintings and moved my great grandmother's rocker into the room. Closet full of little clothes. The chest is stocked with diapers and covers (thank you, Modern Diaper Service. Socks and hats, bedding and blankets, with a changing area on top. Some of my childhood toys, all well loved and well remembered. Other items I'm excited about:. Two paintings on paper by my friend Mike Dowley.

http://sowsearcapitolhill.blogspot.com/2013/10/gardens-ready-for-fall-and-upcoming.html

Rehabbing a capitol hill rowhouse. Wednesday, October 2, 2013. Garden's Ready for Fall, and Upcoming Large Project(s). The garden is ready for fall: old things cleaned out, seeds planted, cat barriers (just some plastic mesh and bamboo stakes) installed. Refrigerator pickles made with carrots and turnips. Beans, tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants still going strong! Verdant pole bean vines against the brilliant sky. A rather large bean ready to be picked. Why does it look like such a wreck?

Rehabbing a capitol hill rowhouse. Tuesday, November 5, 2013. Tiny Nursery, Part 1. Once Ma MJ was here, we taped off the coral area, and then we primed. Next, we primed some more. After several coats of primer, we got to the new color. The BM paint is lovely, goes on well, covers well, no smell, and is worth the $ . Really nice to work with. After two coats of Natura, here is our new Pike's Peak Gray room (upper wall and ceiling are still Behr Linen White). It was still in need of finishing touches, one...

Rehabbing a capitol hill rowhouse. Wednesday, November 21, 2012. The Crappy Little Closet That Could: A Thanksgiving Project. Hello Internet, it's been a while! Not too many projects have been undertaken for the past few months here at the Sow's Ear. We just enjoyed the last fruits of our garden (we had so many green tomatoes when we finally ripped out our vines - couldn't give them all away or find new recipes fast enough) and turned our attention to other things. Hey Okie, you seen Arkie? Tell her Tex has a job for her out in. (notes on art and life from an arkie adrift). Thursday, February 28, 2013. Sometimes when I don't have any ideas, I give myself assignments. Usually, those assignments are to paint from life whatever is around me. For the last few weeks I've been using watercolor, inspired by the watercolor class I taught last semester at GWU. Small watercolors of studio scenes, a new series from the last few weeks. March 17, 2013 at 7:37 PM. Blogs i look at.

Pecorino=is the masculine diminutive of sheep, and refers to cheese, generally such as Pecorino Romano,Pecorino di Pienza. Pecorina=the feminine dimunitive of sheep refers to a certain sexual position most often associated with prison sex. Why do I tell you this? A lesson in etymology? No, my friends,it is a cautionary tale.
