竖琴 英 harp 法 harpe 德 harfe 拉丁 arpa ，是一种包括了弧形颈部 或称为 梁 neck 、共鸣箱 resonator 、五金装置 它的主要作用相当于钢琴或小提琴的琴轸一样，放松或拉紧某条特定的弦 及琴弦 parallel strings 的弦乐器。 中国的箜篌就是其中一种， 诗鬼 李贺曾写过 李凭箜篌引。 竖琴的底部 base 有七个踏板，这些踏板系在圆柱里的七根踏板杆 pedal rods 下端，再由踏板杆连接到颈部里的动盘 action ，负责掌管七个音 左脚si-do-re 右脚mi-fa-sol-la 的升降。 动盘里有两千多个小零件环环相扣，再牵动外面的小圆盘 discs ，藉由改变琴弦长度而得到所需要的音高 每个踏板呼应八度音程中的一个，并有上、中、下三个可以固定位置的凹槽。 最下面的一个半八度，用的是钢弦 wire strings ，中间音域用羊肠弦 gut strings ，高音则因每个人对声音的喜好不同，有时候最高一个八度、或者一个半八度，使用尼龙弦 nylon strings 也有人因为不喜欢尼龙弦又脆又亮的音色，而从中间音域以上全部用羊肠弦。

目前被发掘的第一把拱形竖琴 arched harp ，是出现在美索布达米亚平原，年代为公元前2500年。 现存最古老的爱尔兰竖琴 Irish harp ，是制造于14世纪。 16世纪时，Juan Bermudo比照键盘乐器，发明了双排弦竖琴 double-strung harp。 后来，蒙台威尔地 Monteverdi 的歌剧 ' Orfeo 1607 ' 里所使用的竖琴，就是双排弦竖琴。 在双排弦竖琴后，又出现了三排弦竖琴 triple harp，17世纪初 及镰钩竖琴 hook harp。 镰钩竖琴的原理，与后来发展的半音器竖琴 lever harp 很相似，它是先将几个特定的音调低半音，然后以左手操纵镰钩 hooks 而将音升高半音。 继双排弦与三排弦竖琴之后，在19世纪时出现了交叉弦竖琴 cross-strung chromatic harp。 德布西著名的 'Danse sacree et danse profane 1904 就是写给这种竖琴的。 踏板竖琴 pedal harp 的演变，可推至17世纪末、18世纪初。
