Mission & Vision. Engeye started as a single room health clinic with one nurse and Engeye clinic manager, John Kalule. We opened the clinic as medical students in joint partnership between Ugandans and Americans and continue to rely on this bond in a variety of ways. When asked how we can justify our focus on the villagers of Africa when we have plenty of need here at home, our answer is two-fold: One philosophical, one statistical and reality-based. It is necessary in our daily lives for drinking, cooking, bathing and washing, and yet, until we go without, it’s easy to take for granted. Mission & Vision. We take our responsibility to the environment seriously. Waste disposal is a facet of health care that few ponder, but a topic we’ve come to intimately understand. In an effort improve Engeye Health Clinic’s disposal of waste, a small-scale incinerator was built. Initially we installed a large metal incinerator built with an enormously long smoke stack that looked very similar to a giraffe (images to the right).

Each night, Kinoni and the towns around Ddegeya set up large tin cans, strings of lights and enormous reflective aluminum sheets in preparation for the fluttering hoards. Side streets illuminate in order to lure the mouth-watering bugs. Local venues add fried grasshopper to their menus. Children scour the streets and fields for stray hoppers. Not bad....

Tuesday, July 12, 2011. Final Blog From Uganda. Even the bad news is good news sometimes. We head out for our Safari weekend and there was a small problem with the Safari vehicle. Apparently a metal piece that holds the back door shut had. Broken, while it was temporarily wired shut, it needed to be welded. Bad news, Masaka does not have power again and several villages on our route are also affected so there is no welder that can help. It was wonderful to see the school and to see Sylvia in Uganda. ...
