The Red Herring of Technology in the Classroom. November 10, 2014. Should we teach Macbeth from textbooks or from iPads? Should we have students respond to the questions we pose in class on paper or on e-polling software? Should we ask students to turn to a peer and discuss or to turn to an iPhone and tweet? I’d like to respond to all of these questions with a resounding, “Who cares? Perhaps. Might there be a time during which we rely on technology more than we should? The Power of Calm. 8220;Rachael” and the Purpose of Public Education. October 26, 2014. It was only the second day of school and a girl in my second period English class let’s just call her Rachael was already calling my bluff. Rachael stared around the room, her eyes narrowed in a practiced show of teen angst, looking for someone, anyone, to commiserate with. This is so dumb. Why would anyone do this? Would I give her a reason to care? About what it is we’re doing here, about what my job as a teacher really is. Is pub...

The Power of Calm. November 10, 2014. I don’t think it’s an overstatement to say that during my first year of teaching I was nervous all the time. This may surprise those who know me. I’ve been described as “laid back,” “chill,” “mellow.” I recently had a conversation last week in which I asked someone her definition of a Type A personality. Her response? 8212; enables me to enjoy my students and enjoy myself in their presence. 8220;Rachael” and the Purpose of Public Education. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Musings of a Teacher, Leader, and Learner. Why I fell in love with #EduCon. In Related to Teaching. Asymp; 4 Comments. I often claim to “love” the conference I’m attending. Being surrounded by passionate educators invigorates me–my mind feels sharper, my ideas flow faster, and I can’t wait to come back to revolutionize my classroom…again! What makes EduCon different from other conferences? It’s held in a school. Did you notice the words that were missing from that description? I didn’t mention &#82...

Essential Education | criticalpedagogue

October 25, 2014. November 12, 2014. More accurately, I’d say that education should aspire to produce knowledgeable citizens who are equipped with the critical skills necessary to make their own society. Not their own livelihoods, not their careers, not “their future”, not “practical” knowledge, or even “themselves,” but the world they live in. What’s the difference? We are simply not doing enough to produce students who are prepared and empowered to be agents of change. So when I think of Dr. Patchy...

Miércoles, 3 de junio de 2009. Karla Calderon a school teacher and writer in her article Minds and Hearts, establishes “Education provides knowledge that opens doors for the future and promises happiness and success”. After analyzing her arguments, I can tell the article is too vague because it just refers to the general idea of education and the ideal of to be a teacher. However, through specific examples the writer shows the positive effects of education on people. In contrast the third paragraph which...
