What I learned today

This blog spot is dedicated to all the hardworking Enterprise Admins trying to manage a complex Microsoft-based Active Directory environment. Learning is hard-won and often thankless. My AD environment at this time consists of the following: ~580 Domain Controllers; 33 Domains in a single AD Tree; > Million Objects in AD; ~450,000 users. There are 4 Enterprise Admins, 2 senior, 2 junior. I'm the most senior of the senior :-) although the other senior admin is way smarter than me.

What I learned today: May 2009

http://enterpriseadminanon.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

What I learned today. Thursday, May 28, 2009. AD-Integrated DNS Reverse Zones. Anyway, when I started poking around, I realized the data was stored a little differently than I expected. So let's take one example. I noticed we had four records for the same IP, 10.10.20.51. Three of the records were manual and 1 was dynamic. The dynamic one was the only "accurate" one. The rest were human-generated mistakes. For folks wondering about this, we had some inexperienced (? So, how do DNS zones look? The octal d...

What I learned today. Wednesday, August 26, 2009. Overcoming the Stupidity of Others. Here’s one for you. I spent a good twenty minutes on this. We’ve been trying to prepare our AD forest for the deployment of Windows 2008, so of course, we’ve run the schema extensions, etc. We got to the domain prep steps and low-and-behold, /gpprep failed in 10 of our domains because some admins, in their infinite wisdom, did wild and crazy things with permissions. 1) Find the Problem. 2) Review badgpo.txt. Once you fi...

What I learned today: March 2010

http://enterpriseadminanon.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

What I learned today. Wednesday, March 10, 2010. VBA Macro for Outlook to Save E-mails to File. This is hardly stupendous, and I found various versions of this on the Internet, but sadly, most of the versions simply did not work. The following was my final "massaged" version that actually worked pretty well. Not perfect, but it worked. The task was to write a macro for Outlook that would save the e-mail as a straight TXT file, using the subject as the filename. This is my agenda. This is my agenda.txt.

What I learned today: September 2011

What I learned today. Friday, September 30, 2011. Outlook and Global Catalogs. We had an interesting issue recently where. Clients at a branch office site were getting global catalog services from a domain controller in a remote site. In our environment, we're running. And at the moment are still at forest level 2003 R2, although over 90% of our DCs are. Anyway, at this one site, the users sporadically went for GC services to a hub DC instead of one of their two local ones. You gotta love traces. Looking...
