SIGSTP: February 2013
http://sigstp.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html
Thursday, 21 February 2013. Give your application a shell (and never write any ad-hoc scripts again). As developers, we sometimes have to help operations going smoothly by fiddling with the data "by hand" because there's no GUI to allow people doing some rare and obscure things. One common way of doing it is by connecting to the DB and writing some SQL. But often, accessing your database is not enough, because you need your application code to be run. And for that, you need a shell. Package My: Bob;.

SIGSTP: August 2012

Tuesday, 21 August 2012. The goodness of testing. Wall e-coyote testing a new rocket design. There’s a common view amongst programmers that testing (that is writing tests) is a painful thing you have to do to please your manager, or something you can avoid doing if your manager hasn’t got a clue. Let’s try to debunk that and show that testing is actually fun for the following reasons:. It forces you to write better APIs. By putting you in the role of a user of your code/module/API, it forces you to t...

SIGSTP: September 2012

Tuesday, 25 September 2012. Understanding Unicode and UTF8 in Perl. I know there's a lot of things out there on the subject, but when it comes to Unicode, a quick review of core concepts and bug avoidance guidelines is never a waste of time. It's not meant to be a comprehensive presentation of all Unicode things in Perl. It's meant to insist on a couple of guidelines and give some pointers to get a good start writing a unicode compliant application and avoiding common issues. Friday, 21 September 2012.

Are roles only semantically different from inheritance? | sillymoose [blogs.perl.org]
http://blogs.perl.org/users/sillymoose/2013/11/are-roles-only-semantically-different-from-inheritance.html
A blog about the Perl programming language. Are roles only semantically different from inheritance? On November 3, 2013 10:06 PM. I've been using roles lately and was going to write about them on perltricks.com. However I've come into difficulty in explaining how roles are functionally different from inheritance. I've found that the typical features described about roles in contrast to inheritance are:. Avoid complex inheritance hierarchies. Enforce polymorphism through "requires". Requires - this is use...

SIGSTP: May 2014
http://sigstp.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Saturday, 3 May 2014. Image: Magick with Perlbrew. Image: Magick is great. But it's a pain to install if you are using perlbrew, or if your system's Image Magick library is out of date. After some googling I found that this was the best techniqu. E, but cpanm support is missing, making using Image: Magick very difficult to include in your application's dependencies. So I wrote a perlbrew cpanm compatible Image: Magick perl package. Cpanm -v Alien: ImageMagick. Links to this post. Follow me on Twitter.

SIGSTP: Email::Postman - Yet another email sending package
http://sigstp.blogspot.com/2013/09/emailpostman-yet-another-email-sending.html
Tuesday, 17 September 2013. Email: Postman - Yet another email sending package. I know I know, there is Email: Sender, and Mail: Sendmail, the 'send' method of MIME: Lite, Mail: Mailer and probably other ones I don't know about on the CPAN and also the good old pipe to /bin/sendmail trick. Each of them have their advantages, but none of them actually does what I wanted. Does all the following:. It can send anything that's compatible with Email: Abstract. Rfc822 String, etc.). To = 'drain@example.com',.
