Life in the Humanities. Week 7 Reading Response. February 25, 2016. February 25, 2016. Reading through Sharon Myers’ essay, “Reassessing the ‘Proofreading Trap’: ESL Tutoring and Writing Instruction,” I couldn’t help but agree with her overarching sentiment. Posted in Engl 480. I think a positive moment of inspiration happened for me when I was in middle sch...

Life in the Humanities. Week 12 Reading Response. March 31, 2016. Tutors as Learners” I was struck by how much I enjoyed the thesis sentiment that tutors can utilize consultations to grow and learn as well, outside of the realm of tutoring. While I disagree with some of its sentiments, this article. I found illustrates this similar idea of rigidity versus student learning in a simpler, less nuanced debate. Posted in Engl 480. First & Last paragraph – michaelaluckey

Life in the Humanities. First and Last paragraph. April 11, 2016. 8220;Compare the first and last paragraph of your favorite novel.”. My favorite novel is Ken Kesey’s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” It’s also my favorite movie since I read/watched them both my eighth grade year. I’m not sure why they’re my favorites but for some reason Kesey’s words and Forman’s film stuck with me. Chief Bromden, played by Will Sampson. The concluding line, however, holds the most weight for me than anything else....

Applying for Internships – michaelaluckey

Life in the Humanities. April 18, 2016. As the year is winding down and final papers, projects, and exams all pile up I’ve found myself overcome with anxiety about that one fickle word: internships. This situation is in no way uncommon, many students also feel the strain of having to decide between a paying job and an unpaid internship–it’s a predicament that humanities majors all too often face. Usually, it’s the hopes of finding a unpaid internship that leaves room for a paying jo...Not even 10 years a...

Life in the Humanities. ENGL 300 Blog #1. January 28, 2016. February 3, 2016. The most engaging teacher I ever had was my senior year English teacher, Mr. Shah. Shah was by far one of the most unique people I’d ever met: he refused to own furniture, he coached our ultimate Frisbee team, and he had plans to teach abroad in India. He was equal parts sarcastic and kind, he had fun but also challenged us as students. Posted in Engl 300. Week 3 Reading Responses. January 26, 2016. February 3, 2016. Often as I...

Life in the Humanities. Nationality Within the Center. April 14, 2016. This week’s reading of Denny’s. Was similar to what we’ve been discussing for the past few weeks in class-that is the idea that language and cultural barriers can inhibit learning and lead to, most likely accidentally, social faux paus and offenses. Journalism vs. English – michaelaluckey

Life in the Humanities. Journalism vs. English. March 8, 2016. March 8, 2016. Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about the life of a humanities major. Often, it’s fraught with employment uncertainty and holiday breaks spent justifying your decision. In my English 480 class, we’re beginning to work on a research project and for my topic I’ve chosen to study the differences in writing culture between Journalism and English students. As I’ve wrestled with this question I wondered if maybe it’s s...Still, I ...
