Every Week Essay: May 2008

http://everyweekessay.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Tuesday, May 27, 2008. This is going to be a shorter post. I was at my cousin's wedding all weekend long, and I didn't come close to finishing the essay am working on. However, I do have some not-so-polished thoughts I want to share. In theory, I don't mind paying taxes. I like roads, judges, public schools, national parks, firemen, policewomen, and social service workers. I even appreciate the FBI and at least some of our 11 active aircraft carriers. All of the money collected as social security payment...

Every Week Essay: Egocentrism in The War on Drugs and Supply-Side Economics

http://everyweekessay.blogspot.com/2008/06/egocentrism-in-war-on-drugs-and-supply.html

Thursday, June 19, 2008. Egocentrism in The War on Drugs and Supply-Side Economics. The War on Drugs in 180 Seconds. For a great article on the war on drugs by Ben Wallace-Wells, (from which I have borrowed liberally), go here: How America Lost the War on Drugs. All in all, the war on drugs has cost $500 billion over 35 years. Although many of the old drug cartels have been broken up, the availability and use of drugs hasn’t changed much. While I’m on the topic, here is another article. In our market sys...

Every Week Essay: Where My Moral Compass Points

http://everyweekessay.blogspot.com/2008/10/where-my-moral-compass-points.html

Monday, October 20, 2008. Where My Moral Compass Points. As I alluded to in a comment on the previous thread, outlining my moral compass last week has really helped put some things in perspective. It helped me to realize that energy/environmental/economic issues are very important to me. For whatever reason, these are things I think about (and have always thought about since at least 8th or 9th grade). When I brainstorm business ideas, I think of these issues. I am also interested if anyone would like to...

Every Week Essay: Rational Stewardship: A Way Forward?

http://everyweekessay.blogspot.com/2008/08/rational-stewardship-way-forward.html

Wednesday, August 13, 2008. Rational Stewardship: A Way Forward? The market economy is the most efficient social system the human world has ever witnessed. It allows resources to be allocated quickly with a minimum bureaucracy to maintain the money supply and curb abuses. The system, however, has a built-in problem that if left untreated, will lead to the system’s collapse. This would all be fine and dandy if there were an infinite (or at least ever-growing) number of resources to be turned into consumab...

Eurasian Hobos: January 2013

http://euasiahobos.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 24, 2013. Everyone's favorite day for Korean students looking cute is the day before our Chuseok break. Chuseok is often likened to Korean Thanksgiving. Just like last year. Dressing the kindergarteners in their Hanbok (traditional Korean garb) is adorable. One of my kindergarten classes: Woojin, Jackie, Amber, Chloe, Patrick, and Tony (Many students leave a day early so they can visit relatives for longer). Eating said rice cakes. Making Jaegi (basically traditional Korean hacky sack).

Eurasian Hobos: April 2012

http://euasiahobos.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Saturday, April 21, 2012. I arrived in London to find that my couchsurf hosts had not received my message confirming that I would be staying with them. Thankfully, they were fine with me staying nonetheless. They served a lovely roast to me and another couch surfer. I had spent two half weeks in London in 2006, but was at the time too cheap to pay the overpriced entrance to Westminster Abbey. I'm glad I did this time around, though to be fair to my past self, the outside is just as impressive. I had enou...

Eurasian Hobos: September 2014

http://euasiahobos.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Tuesday, September 2, 2014. This return trip was at the invitation of Kyungrae, the man who we met at Bongamsa Temple. On Buddha's Birthday, and who became our unofficial guide as well as our generous ride. Barbara and I took him up on his offer to show us around Daegu and to go visit Haeinsa together. My first visit was by bus, so I unknowingly passed right by a pavilion that was famed as a monk philosopher's favorite meditation grounds. The river there really was quite peaceful. Dunkel in the Far East.

Eurasian Hobos: February 2014

http://euasiahobos.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Thursday, February 6, 2014. Buddha's Birthday at Bongamsa Temple. In 2011, Buddha's Birthday (as celebrated in Korea) fell on May 10th, a Tuesday. Our singular day off was enough time to visit Bongamsa Temple, which is only open to the public one day a year for the occasion. Barbara, Sam, and I took an exceedingly early morning bus out Mungyeon in central South Korea. The surrounding mountains were completely shrouded in mist at dawn. The guardian lions at this temple had some goofy expressions. I never ...

Eurasian Hobos: July 2012

http://euasiahobos.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, July 24, 2012. Where my belongings and laptop were searched for drugs or child pornography. Oh, profiling. Good times. In her defense, I do look super sketchy with my travel beard. Once the airport security determined that I am in fact not a threat, I was able to head out into the city. That day I mostly just trudged out to the hostel and ate some Thai food. I considered signing up for one of their day trips before realizing I could just spend bus fare to get to the same places. I would be terri...

Eurasian Hobos: Ben and Elana's Wedding

Thursday, November 6, 2014. Ben and Elana's Wedding. I have trouble thinking of my time in the US as travel blog-worthy because I have trouble thinking of it as travel. Which is silly. Anyway, After my second year in Korea, I returned for Ben and Elana's amazing wedding at Newt's Hollow, outside of Berkeley. Photos by Stacia Torborg. Eurasian Hobos: August 2014

http://euasiahobos.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Wednesday, August 20, 2014. You may have noticed that in my Japan pictures I had a lot less hair than usual. Here's what I looked like the week before:. This picture is like a glimpse into an alternate universe where someone with my genetics grew up deep in meth lab territory:. Curiosity sated, I went for the Ra's Al Ghul look:. The fuzz came back by the end of my week in Japan. I only had one more week in Korea before jetting off to the Bay Area for Ben and Elana's beautiful whimsical wedding. I fully e...

Eurasian Hobos: Japan Day 7, Part 6: The Stone Lanterns of Kasuga Taisha Shrine

http://euasiahobos.blogspot.com/2014/07/japan-day-7-part-6-stone-lanterns-of.html

Tuesday, July 29, 2014. Japan Day 7, Part 6: The Stone Lanterns of Kasuga Taisha Shrine. I had a pleasant, though hot, walk across the Eastern side of Nara park. In the Southeastern part stood a Shinto shrine. The area around it is filled with stone or cement lanterns, covered in moss and surrounded by large trees. It would be amazing to visit during one of the lantern festivals to see them all lit, but I enjoyed the lanterns even during the daylight. A fountain paid tribute to the deer residents. I was ...
