Blogging around the farm. A Two Rein Horse. March 30, 2017. Bull; 0 Comments. I thought I’d take a moment and share with you a quick video about the two-rein. I’ve just recently moved my horse Dino into this set-up. He is the first two-rein horse I’ve ever made, and so I’m watching a lot of DVDs on how to NOT mess this up! I really enjoy the teachings […]. Blogging around the farm. We Are (Not) Monsanto! May 23, 2015. Bull; Comments Off on We Are (Not) Monsanto! Today there will be protests, marches and signs made to protest Monsanto. People will say they dominate farmers, they make farmers plant their seed and use their chemicals and that we simply have no choice. And they’re using farmers to project their views. Every person who chooses Monsanto seed CHOOSES it, deliberately, and signs the […]. Read more →. Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window).

Agriculture’s future is here | Across the Back Fence

https://acrossthebackfence.wordpress.com/2013/01/12/agricultures-future-is-here

Across the Back Fence. Agriculture’s future is here. January 12, 2013. During a brief conversation with an Ag journalist the other day the subject of marketing and over-production came up. As we talked we found ourselves agreeing that some of the commodity groups representing various products out there do an abysmally poor job of marketing and selling their ever-increasing supplies. Not so with almonds. Cranberry almond loaf (Photo credit: elana’s pantry). The other commodity groups and agricultural mark...

What We Can Do For you. You may be right, I may be crazy. June 25, 2012. Not sure how many of you are avid fans of Billy Joel, but a Twitter friend reminded me of that song this week when I sent a tweet about referring to people as “crazy” simply because they don’t see the world the same way. My tweet was prompted by a discussion and it prompted much more conversation… So I figured we may as well continue the discussion with a blog post. Any Benefits from a Change in Perspective? May 24, 2012. The quote ...

Griggs Dakota: July 2014

http://www.griggsdakota.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, July 31, 2014. Famous Visitors: The Clydesdales Arrive. We would not have been more excited to meet rock stars. These fellows travel in comfort with a cushioned rubber floor and spacious stalls. What is it about horses? They were made to melt hearts. Hey, blue eyes, want a Bud? I bet you say that to all the girls. His friends were quieter and more businesslike. Each of the Clydesdales has his own locker, which carries individual harness, collar and bridle. The wagon polishing was nearly finished.

Across the Back Fence. For those of you who don’t subscribe, may I recommend…. September 21, 2012. Culling our sacred cows. A tsunami of sorts is building among a generation of farmers and ranchers that, coupled with the right mix of non-farming agricultural advocates, looks to turn the current system of agricultural promotions upside down. And that’s a good thing! Like a tidal wave, this wave has as its origins a trembling. This trembling is driven…. September 16, 2012. How can dairy industry succeed?

Griggs Dakota: December 2014

http://www.griggsdakota.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Tuesday, December 23, 2014. However, tradition brings comfort in its own way. The very mention of lutefisk causes many people to wrinkle their noses. It is quite aromatic, especially during cooking. But as my mother does, as my grandmothers did, and as my great-grandmothers did, I cook lutefisk once in a while. We serve it every Christmas Eve. Our menu has remained virtually unchanged for over 100 years. The reason makes an interesting story. Now, back to the present, let the celebrating begin! This my h...

Griggs Dakota: October 2014

http://www.griggsdakota.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Friday, October 31, 2014. There is a scary little pumpkin face in GriggsDakota. He seems to follow wherever I go. He likes to play hide and seek. And the corn field. I found him peeking out of buildings. And perched on a fence post,. He offered to climb up and check the bin. He wanted to drive a load of barley to Sutton, but he didn't have his license in his pocket. He played in the junkyard. And found the wheels that brought us here. He took a chilly dip on a brisk afternoon. Thursday, October 30, 2014.

Griggs Dakota: February 2015

Friday, February 27, 2015. The Crossroads of Winter: More or Less. The sun itself has begun to drive away the cold on the days it shines. And so, as February finishes, we begin to hope for Spring. There are no apparent signs of Spring on the lake. Or anywhere on the land, for that matter. We must look for more subtle signs. Like calves that are scheduled to begin arriving next week. And strong shadows that are a result of bright afternoon sun. Next week will be March. And keep our hopes up in GriggsDakota.

Griggs Dakota: May Turns Wet and Wintery

http://www.griggsdakota.com/2015/05/may-turns-wet-and-wintery.html

Tuesday, May 19, 2015. May Turns Wet and Wintery. We have passed the middle of May. If it was February in GriggsDakota we would have several feet of snow drifted into mountains. Because it is May, most of our precipitation has fallen as rain. But this week we have snow falling. We were in need of moisture and we have had over five inches in the last couple of weeks. I keep buckets of water on the deck to water the plants I started in the porch, but as you can see, it is crusted with ice. With the launch ...

Zondag 16 augustus 2015. If a man writes a better book, if he can preach a better sermon, if he can make a better candlestick than anyone else, though he make his home in the woods, the world will beat a trodden path to his door. - Ralph Waldo Emerson. Blogging around the farm. Will America Pay the Price for a New Mandate? February 20, 2018.
