Down by the Creek

Our Property by the Creek. Wednesday, December 31, 2014. Goodbye and good ridance 2014. The truth of the matter is that 2014 has been hard. There have been bright spots, but they have been so overshadowed by the hardness that sometimes it is hard to see them, to feel them, to remember them. 2013 seems so long ago. 2015 can't get here fast enough. And all we can do is hope that somehow 2015 will be better than 2014 has been to us. The good news is that 2015 will be my last year in any portion of pregnancy...

Down by the Creek: November 2014

http://farmingmama.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Our Property by the Creek. Saturday, November 22, 2014. First picture, first daylight sighting, on the right side of the door opening. She came out to visit us from somewhere in the mess of a garage, hungry for attention, happy in the sunlight. Giggling sisters sledding down the hill, photobomb courtesy of the calico cat. Thanks for the breakfast, and the petting. Anything interesting on your mitten? Oh well, back to breakfast. The pictures here were the first I was able to take of her, today, the first ...

Down by the Creek: Installing a light timer for the front porch

http://farmingmama.blogspot.com/2011/06/installing-light-timer-for-front-porch.html

Our Property by the Creek. Wednesday, June 8, 2011. Installing a light timer for the front porch. A few months ago I bought a timer switch for our front porch lights. Last spring my husband replaced the old junky looking lights with new pretty ones. While my parents were visiting last week, and several months after I purchased the timer, I finally installed it. It was really nice having my dad there as backup in case I needed some advice, or wasn't sure what I was doing. He mainly stayed in the b...Then ...

Down by the Creek: August 2014

http://farmingmama.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Our Property by the Creek. Tuesday, August 26, 2014. When it rains it pours. As the flood waters moved across the alfalfa field next door. Blurry photo of the entire alfalfa field covered in flood waters, as darkness fell on the landscape and the heavy rain finally started to let up a bit. Flows swept through the chicken runs, underneath the chicken coop, through the garden, pig pen, and then down to meet with the flood waters. The lower garden was covered in about 18 inches plus of debris and sand, tota...

Down by the Creek: March 2014

http://farmingmama.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Our Property by the Creek. Tuesday, March 18, 2014. We've been decluttering or simplifying for quite a while now, realistically I've been purging extra belongings since I first started packing for my move out west 8 years ago for grad school, and I've done major purges several times since, once when I moved into my truck for a season or two nearing the end of grad school, and once as I moved down into the States to be with the mister. Some furniture (not my rowing machine though! Links to this post.

Them's My Sentiments: September 2013

http://themsmysentiments.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, 26 September 2013. No More Pine Tree. The pine tree perch for the wireless node has been superceded by a genuine, bolted to the rock tower. Here you see the intrepid climber fastening the last piece in place. We are all hoping that the next storm will not cause any more fried electronics - the tower is grounded! And here are the crazy climbing guys mugging for the camera. I can't believe there is no camera shake in this one, as the pair of them were terrifying me. Links to this post.

Them's My Sentiments: Dogged

http://themsmysentiments.blogspot.com/2015/07/dogged.html

Tuesday, 21 July 2015. Note to readers: this blog is in large part a record for my granddaughter and so this is a long and somewhat tedious catalogue of life-with-dogs as a record for her. Feel free to quit reading after four paragraphs. A policeman arrived to investigate and I took him to the kitchen to see Rusty who, shameless beggar that he was, lay down on his back and waved four paws at the cop, inviting a belly rub. End of incident. One spring night we arrived at our rural property and he wrenched ...

Monday, 10 November 2014. Thinking Grateful Thoughts about Gratitude. So, thanks to my tagger, Jane Paul. I had my reward in doing the exercise. And so would anyone. Most of those who read me have done it, I think, but if you have not, you are tagged. You’ll be glad you did. Links to this post. Friday, 7 November 2014. Bits and pieces of posts that didn’t get finished. And are now sadly out of date. Too bad. I got a superb dinner out of it, though, as it is JG’s 75. By JG and dumped into piles to compost...

http://themsmysentiments.blogspot.com/2015/05/just-after-ides-of-may.html

Monday, 18 May 2015. Just after the Ides of May. Spring in Lanark, much as usual except for low rainfall, although we have rain forecast for today. Having typed that, I looked out the office window and saw rain falling. And I meant to get the seed patches in before it started. Ah, well. It is Victoria Day. Here in Canada. We celebrate the Queen’s birthday on the first Monday before the 24. JG has been out hunting porcupines, with a view to keeping the YD’s dog out of the hands of the vet. I love taking t...

Wednesday, 15 July 2015. The dog and cat have gone home after somewhat over four weeks with us. The grandkid has arrived (a bit of overlap) for a week and her friend will arrive Friday for the weekend. I have not looked beyond next Monday. Tomorrow is boating day. Lots of sandwiches, drinks and snacks. Worms. Her bedtime, and mine. Lovely to be needed. 16 July 2015 at 07:27. 16 July 2015 at 08:26. Well wave as we boat by. Tuesday, 23 June 2015. June Bugs, and other Facile Observations. We have too much grass. It has been warm and rainy, interspersed with beautiful sun, and the grass is growing so fast JG is mowing like a mad man and still not keeping up. This weather has also caused the flowers to come ahead fast and we already have orange lilies in bloom, along with the late iris and all sorts of wild flowers. My white lilac was loaded, early. Watching another series of thunderheads whisk in. We do not need more rain!

Saturday, 14 June 2014. More Poetry Last Month. A COUNTRY WITHOUT A MYTHOLOGY. By Douglas Le Pan. No monuments or landmarks guide the stranger. Going among this savage people, masks. Taciturn or babbling out an alien jargon. And moody as barbaric skies are moody. Berries must be his food. Hurriedly. He shakes the bushes, plucks pickerel from the river,. Forgetting every grace and ceremony,. Feeds like an Indian, and is on his way. And yet, for all his haste, time is worth nothing. Wild-rice, stumps, weed...

Them's My Sentiments: August 2014

http://themsmysentiments.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 20 August 2014. I feel compelled to put together a post about Cats I Have Known. In spite of this sort of benign indifference, my journey through life has been littered with encounters with cats. Http:/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shmoo. Or http:/ www.urbandictionary.com/define.php? A few weeks later we spotted him living at a butcher’s shop some blocks away. And then, a few years later a small and starveling cat turned up one day nosing around under the bird feeder. She was pitiful, all skin an...
