Sarah Wallace: "Crossing" from Lost Names
http://wallaceworldcultures.blogspot.com/2008/05/crossing-from-lost-names.html
Wednesday, May 7, 2008. Crossing" from Lost Names. I thought this first story was pretty interesting. It was not at all what I had been expecting though. I expected it to be kind of like Things Fall Apart. Where there are like mini stories that all tie together to make one novel. However, that doesn't seem to be the case for Lost Names. From what I understand, each story is about the same family, just at different times in their life. May 20, 2008 at 3:11 PM. Often in Asia, names are not used but instead...

Saturday, May 10, 2008. Sold (202-end) and Final Thoughts. I wonder if the other girls ever got out? I do not see why they could not have taken down the entire operation. Is prostitution not illegal in India? I guess some people probably listen while others do not. Even awareness campaigns would be helpful. I doubt that many people are aware of how large an industry this really is. Something definitely needs to be done so that others do not suffer from this. If not, where is she now? I think she saw what...

Sarah Wallace: "Homecoming"--Lost Names
http://wallaceworldcultures.blogspot.com/2008/05/homecoming-lost-names.html
Wednesday, May 7, 2008. While the class was outside for a break (kind of like our recess? I know I probably would. Yet for some reason, he is still excited about going to school. I wonder if he will later change his mind, or if he will always like school? Yeah, the teacher beating up the kid was a shocker, but it also sets the tone for how much the Korean's take pride in staying Korean. They won't give up their identity no matter what. Luckily there were some good teachers who stepped in.

Saturday, May 10, 2008. The novel begins with Lakshmi talking about Ama. Fixing the roof. They have a thatch roof because her stepfather gambles a lot and loses most everything that they have. Those who have a tin roof are considered wealthy. Lakshmi and her friend Gita. In the yard. However, Gita. Lakshmi's stepfather came back one day from gambling with a motorcycle. Ama. I agree about the cultural differences. Today in America, most teens refuse to do anything. May 20, 2008 at 3:16 PM. The Stepfather ...

Sarah Wallace: Sold (52-101)
http://wallaceworldcultures.blogspot.com/2008/05/sold-51-101.html
Saturday, May 10, 2008. It's amazing how many times she is sold and re-sold, and you really get a feel for how evolved this network is for human trafficking. Lakshmi is so innocent and has no idea where she's heading off to. I think they kind of bank on that. Mumtaz is pure evil, and uses these girls like disposable tools. She doesn't hesitate to throw girls out on the street who can no longer serve her needs. This book gives a good account of just how cheap life is viewed in India. Very sad.

Sarah Wallace: February 2008
http://wallaceworldcultures.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html
Thursday, February 28, 2008. I thought it was interesting to learn about the Hindus and their religion, but it is definitely not for me. I was so confused, and although reading other people's thoughts and comments has helped me some, I'm still confused. To me, Hinduism seems to have a lot of holes in it. Tuesday, February 26, 2008. I don't really know. I do, however, know that everyone causes disappointment and are disappointed sometimes. These stories gave different examples of how this disappoi...I thi...

Sarah Wallace: January 2008
http://wallaceworldcultures.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html
Wednesday, January 30, 2008. When Okonkwo returns to Obierika's house, he is meeting with his daughter's suitor and his father. They discussed other tribes traditions of settling a bride price. They settle the bride price with sticks. I also found it kind of odd that they do not talk about why they are there until after they have all finished drinking. That would really irritate me because I like to get right to the point. Saturday, January 26, 2008. In this chapter, a lot can be learned about the hardsh...

Sarah Wallace: "Lost Names"

Saturday, May 10, 2008. They just like to be in charge and make everyone feel below them. Wow, that's quite a summary there. I like your comparison to the Nazis and the Jews, sort of how the treatment gets worse and worse as the novel goes on. Did you finish the book? If so, what was your impression of the ending? Saturday, May 10, 2008. I know that stuff like this really happens, but I think the details tend to be swept under the rug. The topic seems to be taboo. I cannot even imagine what Lakshmi and the other girls must be going through. I think some of the girls have just been hardened, like Monica, but others, like Shahanna, are still in pain over what they are going through. I wonder if Ama and Lakshmi's stepfather knew what they were doing to her, or if they actually thought that she was going to be a maid?
