Notes from Davy Jones's locker: Lentil soup
http://sleyed.blogspot.com/2007/11/lentil-soup.html
Notes from Davy Jones's locker. Observations from the weather deck. Tuesday, November 20, 2007. I'm OK with lentils, although I wouldn't call them a favorite. I've made a bunch of lentil dishes, all of which, I think, are Indian. Even with plenty of tinkering, nothing special. This soup, however, passes the relatively easy "me" test and the much more stringent butterfly lady test. This was a fact-finding mission, not a closely measured soup session, so measurements are approximate:. 2 dried bay leaves.

Notes from Davy Jones's locker: miscellany, plus lasagna
http://sleyed.blogspot.com/2006/04/miscellany-plus-lasagna.html
Notes from Davy Jones's locker. Observations from the weather deck. Sunday, April 23, 2006. Miscellany, plus lasagna. Had a peculiar dream Saturday night that was set partly at the Y. In the dream - this is the peculiar part, the rest of the dream was totally boring - Gary's "real" name turned out to be Tim. Bizarro - I named him Gary, for crying out loud. True enough, but it wasn't a bad addition to the sauce for the lasagna:. Eight lasagna noodles, cooked, drained and cooled. 2 medium carrots, chopped.

Notes from Davy Jones's locker: Pork satay experiment
http://sleyed.blogspot.com/2007/04/pork-satay-experiment.html
Notes from Davy Jones's locker. Observations from the weather deck. Monday, April 16, 2007. I had a couple of pieces of pork but no brilliant ideas until the butterfly lady suggested satay. Okey-dokey. I fished around and found some ideas that resulted in this "recipe." I was surprised to find I had all the ingredients. Pork satay with spicy peanut sauce. Before you do anything else, get. A can of unsweetened coconut milk. Now, cut into 3-inch-by-1-inch, quarter-inch thick strips. 1 tablespoon olive oil.

Notes from Davy Jones's locker: Chowder time
http://sleyed.blogspot.com/2006/12/chowder-time.html
Notes from Davy Jones's locker. Observations from the weather deck. Sunday, December 17, 2006. All the ingredients were staring at me (so was the Newfy, once she realized I was making some Maritime chow), so I made a batch of clam chowder, my adaptation of a "Joy of Cooking" recipe (their default is for Manhattan-style chowder, which I think sounds awful). Well, of course. I know, I know, you've seen this before. But I improved this post with pictures. 3 10-ounce cans clams, drained (reserve the liquid!

Notes from Davy Jones's locker. Observations from the weather deck. Friday, November 06, 2009. Printers would of course agree about colors that are combinations of standardized bases, like red/green/blue or cyan/magenta/yellow/black, but I think those schemes are useful only to people who have learned what the base colors look like. Notes from Davy Jones's locker: eats, y'all
http://sleyed.blogspot.com/2006/05/eats-yall.html
Notes from Davy Jones's locker. Observations from the weather deck. Monday, May 29, 2006. Besides the usual weekend treats of samosas stuffed with sookhe aloo and plantain waffles (with the butterfly lady's original, brilliant, reverse-engineered coconut dip), I also concocted (ergo the approximate ingredients) manicotti pomodori e gambero. Why this dish works, besides the tasty ingredients, is that the grape tomatoes and spaghetti squash balance the cream sauce and shrimp. Manicotti pomodori e gambero.

Notes from Davy Jones's locker: Squash
http://sleyed.blogspot.com/2006/08/squash.html
Notes from Davy Jones's locker. Observations from the weather deck. Tuesday, August 29, 2006. I like squash: the word, the food item. And probably the beverage. I'm not so sure about the game, which seems hoity-toity but is probably fun. It never looks fun in the movies when the rich guys are playing it, but lots of stuff rich people do looks un-fun. Zucchini or summer squash, sliced into 3/8-inch-thick slices (enough to do one layer of whatever casserole you're using). Arrange the slices on top of the o...
