Greg Mercer’s visual journal. I haven’t been sketching on the El much recently, but I’m hoping to get back into the game. Nick has been on a tear lately and consistently has awesome photography, motion graphics, videocasts, and tutorials up on his site. This is one of a few slow motion videos he and his coworkers at Digital Kitchen shot with a camera that captures 1000 frames per second. Check out the others that he posted on his blog as well. The Mex Tape: May 2009

http://themextape.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 24, 2009. Audio Postcard: The 1985 Earthquake. Having missed out on the last earthquake during the Swine Flu, my first reaction was to get excited when my chair began to sway in the swanky Starbucks in Condesa on Friday. The thrill quickly turned to worry when my friends and I locked eyes, grasping the table with our hands, and heard the Mexican girls next to us repeat to each other, " No mames, No mames. Phrases to listen for:. Está temblando poquitito -. It's shaking just a little. Two stre...

The Mex Tape: March 2009

http://themextape.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, March 31, 2009. Had an awesome weekend with my visitors from the D.F. It was so good having lovely people in my apartment that I began to reconsider this whole living alone business. Monk-like solitude in the mountains is cool and all, but I was jonesin' for some company and very un-monk-like gossip (side note: thanks for leaving that book about monks. Man: Do you need help finding your way to the club? Me: Actually we do. I just moved here. Man: Ok. So you know Juarez street? Feeling like I sud...

The Mex Tape: Prepare to sigh

http://themextape.blogspot.com/2008/11/prepare-to-sigh.html

Sunday, November 23, 2008. Pedro Infante sings a goosebump-inducing serenade in "Escuela de Vagabundos" (1955). To be honest, I would have to say the most amazing thing about that video is how they used to get 15 guys to all show up at once for a impromptu balcony singing. I don't think you could coordinate that many schedules today! Heath got the Marching band to play along didn't he? Man, what a show off! November 24, 2008 at 12:15 AM. The Mex Tape: Raise your hand if you feel like caca.

http://themextape.blogspot.com/2009/05/raise-your-hand-if-you-feel-like-caca.html

Saturday, May 9, 2009. Raise your hand if you feel like caca. 160;Oh right, you can't even raise your hand. Nor could you notice that you were putting your shirt on inside-out until it simply was too late. You can't exert yourself beyond ripping open a packet of powdered soup and stirring with one of those excellent two-foot-long Mexican wooden spoons, god bless them, while seated at your kitchen table, head slumped into crook of elbow, wishing to god that Please Please Me. Weirdly though, the evidence o...

The Mex Tape: February 2009

http://themextape.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 22, 2009. Audio Postcard: Ode to Sweetness. Aztecs making Chocolate in 1671 (from the  Mariners' Museum. Here's a song I've been listening to a lot lately, which comes from the INAH. Fonoteca Mexican Music series. This particular album, La Dulcería M. Mexican sweets) compiles songs from all over Mexico that deal with one fabulous topic: candy. . 160;for example, are sung over and over again on some tracks, imitating the way that the street vendors called  pregoneros. While strongly regre...

The Mex Tape: October 2008

http://themextape.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

Monday, October 27, 2008. Today I had to make a rare trip to a payphone in order to call Puebla. I went to the one around the corner from my apartment, next to the fruit stand. When I got there, to my surprise, someone was using it. I had to wait in line. For a payphone. I don't know if I'll ever get to do that again. Sunday, October 26, 2008. Which is considered a lot even among bench-pressers by the time I come home. No tequila (on weekdays). No beer (on weekdays). They find on their property, because ...

The Mex Tape: Last looks

http://themextape.blogspot.com/2009/05/last-looks.html

Thursday, May 21, 2009. I moved out of my apartment in Xalapa and am now back in Mexico City for one final week of tacos, cervezas, and farewells. There are few signs of Swine Flu having ever been here, except for the city health workers who now stand in the subway, squeezing hand sanitizer out of condiment bottles into the hands of riders before they board. I hope they keep that going—it's great! The elementary school in Coatepec, near Xalapa. A fandango on my last night in Xalapa (see my official blog.

The Mex Tape: Jejeje

http://themextape.blogspot.com/2009/05/jejeje.html

Monday, May 4, 2009. The flu is so last week. Everyone's in a good mood. Enjoying this strange interval when business are reopening, but school is still out. Kids are sitting in their living rooms and on their porches, wearing T-shirts and taking their school lessons over the radio. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Sunday, November 23, 2008. Pedro Infante sings a goosebump-inducing serenade in "Escuela de Vagabundos" (1955). Thursday, November 20, 2008. This last week, except for when I was working on my tan in Acapulco, has felt very intellectual. Not for anything I did, heck no (although I did start a reading a book! The main character:  A teenage poet named Juan García Madero in  The Savage Detectives. I looked back at the crowd of (mostly male) admirers, and must have shaken my head or something, because one of...

The Mex Tape: Audio Postcard: Someone Else's Serenade

http://themextape.blogspot.com/2009/05/audio-postcard-someone-elses-serenade.html

Sunday, May 10, 2009. Audio Postcard: Someone Else's Serenade. Ok, before you get depressed by the title of this audio postcard, let me say that it is actually a recording of one of my most contented moments in Mexico. It came after I was feeling pretty rotten yesterday, on both the physical and loneliness scale. Nothing like being sick and alone in a country that has been nothing but sick and alone for two weeks. You're killin' me Kates! May 11, 2009 at 12:11 AM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Library ideas gained outside the classroom. Friday, December 20, 2013. This was a really interesting year in work for me. I'm part-time (by choice) and the bulk of my responsibility has been reference work, with a side of helping plan and run programs, as well as selecting teen fiction and non-fiction for the library. It hasn't been an easy transition but I've tried to work with it. Now with the year wrapping up, I thought reflecting a bit on those changes was worthwhile. Over the course of this year, I:.
