Harlequin Cruising Blog: April 2013
http://harlequinsail.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
A brief on-line diary and photo album covering the travels of SY Harlequin. Easter in the Hauraki Gulf. Easter saw Jim and Sue back aboard for a few weeks. The plan was to cruise up to Marsden Cove and Whangarei Town Quay marinas to see which would be most suitable for long-term berthing over the winter. Dinner was taken ashore at a nearby Thai restaurant, where we were surprised to be told that alcoholic drinks were 'off', due to it being Easter Sunday. Apparently a law here? Beauty and the Beast. Sadly...

Harlequin Cruising Blog: October 2013
http://harlequinsail.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
A brief on-line diary and photo album covering the travels of SY Harlequin. The second lads' push comprised JC and elder son, Charlie, another John (very confusing, so we called him 'Bob'), Gareth and Rhys - back for more punishment, if only for 24 hrs. With the advance party having taken care of provisioning earlier in the day (thanks, John), we were able to depart Whangarei within minutes of arrival on the very last of the tide - skimming the mud as we shot downstream a full 3 hrs after the high. JC an...

Harlequin Cruising Blog: July 2013
http://harlequinsail.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
A brief on-line diary and photo album covering the travels of SY Harlequin. Work took its toll for the next couple of months, so it was July before Jim managed back for a boys' sail, planning to head up to explore Tutukaka. Borrowing a car from a kind Kiwi CX mate for the drive up to Whangarei was a very pleasant bonus. JC, Chris and Rhys were there in advance. And impatient. Rather than wait an hour, having lost one of the boat keys, they broke in! Must have been thirsty. Wrestling with the controls.

Harlequin Cruising Blog: Lake Macquarie
http://harlequinsail.blogspot.com/2015/04/lake-macquarie.html
A brief on-line diary and photo album covering the travels of SY Harlequin. Leaving Newcastle for Sydney, it was never our intention to visit Lake Macquarie. The pilot notes and chart for the approach through the Swansea Channel just seemed a little daunting, with shifting sandbanks and incomplete dredging v's our 2.2 m draft. Best to get a local pilot they suggest - so why bother? Further investigation raised the question of which. But no rush, since high tide at the other. The lake has a very small tid...

Harlequin Cruising Blog: January 2013
http://harlequinsail.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
A brief on-line diary and photo album covering the travels of SY Harlequin. CIQ clearance out of (or into) Australia through the Brisbane/Moreton Bay area is possible at a number of ports, but none further north than Scarborough. So this was to be our jumping-off point for the Tasman crossing. The positioning sail was made interesting by an early touch of mal-de-mer for some (we had barely started! Getting hung up in a large Sargasso-style line of flotsam from ex-TC Oswald. And navigating the entry into ...

Harlequin Cruising Blog: Sydney photo-op'
http://harlequinsail.blogspot.com/2015/03/sydney-photo-op.html
A brief on-line diary and photo album covering the travels of SY Harlequin. A rather dull icon. OK, it had to be done: the classic photo opportunity by the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The weather was a bit dull at first attempt, as we motored by en-route to anchor in Blackwattle Bay by the Anzac Bridge - an interesting anchorage, right in the CBD by the Sydney Fish Market. So we came back with friends for a Sydney Harbour cruise and timed the weather perfectly this time. Clubs, mari...
