First Grade Smiles: 10 Ways to Use Binder Rings in the Classroom
http://first-grade-smiles.blogspot.com/2014/08/10-ways-to-use-binder-rings-in-classroom.html
Saturday, August 16, 2014. 10 Ways to Use Binder Rings in the Classroom. My Bright Idea for you today is hopefully going to give you a few more ways to use something simple in your classroom and solve a problem you didn't know you had. We'll start out simple, and a little obvious. Use it to hang your recess whistle on a lanyard or a quick and easy (no pinching finger) way to add keys. Those other ones can cause serious injury! 2 Bind Classroom Books. 3 Attach labels to bins or directions to center bins.

First Grade Smiles: Working on Routines
http://first-grade-smiles.blogspot.com/2013/09/working-on-routines.html
Sunday, September 15, 2013. Routines, routines, routines! What else is there really to do in those first few weeks of school? And truthfully, it is unfair to expect that 1st graders just coming off of summer CAN do that. It makes me feel awful to spend so much time at my teacher table testing and not enough time helping them learn our routines. Here's a few things we worked on this week:. First up is Daily Math. To read a post about our Daily Math Folders. Students have a writing journal and there are mo...

The Reinspired Teacher: March 2015
http://thereinspiredteacher.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Friday, March 13, 2015. I have done morning messages with my classes for years, even in Kindergarten. I write a message in letter format. I always include a certain number of mistakes, many of them are based on skills we are learning. Then, I include a problem for them to solve in Language or Math, which gives a good review. I thought it would be cool to make this into a Powerpoint that animates the corrections. Then, I realized this is a great idea to share with other teachers! Here are a few pictures!

The Reinspired Teacher: August 2014
http://thereinspiredteacher.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Saturday, August 16, 2014. Adventures in Whole Brain Teaching Week 1. I discovered Whole Brain Teaching. On the first day of school, I was all ready to start WBT. I knew to teach Class-Yes and the WBT rules first. I knew to practice them over and over until the class could do them flawlessly. I also introduced the scoreboard so the children would be even more excited about the process. The first Class-Yes was met with a few groans, and, "I've already done this! Stay tuned for more Adventures in Whole Bra...

First Grade Spies: Small group math
http://firstgradespies.blogspot.com/2013/03/small-group-math_8.html
Friday, March 8, 2013. How many of you are already teaching math in small groups? I made the change 2 years ago and don't think I could go back now. I love teaching math in small groups. Basically, I begin math each day with a short whole group lesson that either reviews a previously learned skill, or introduces a new one. Then we move into math stations. Station 1 is guided math with me. Station 3 is a computer station and students are able to go to practice math on various websites. AbCya. They bring t...

Saturday, July 5, 2014. Classroom Library Organization - New and Improved! I hope you are all having a restful summer! I am busy tackling my very long summer list of things to do…. The biggest project so far has been a revamp of my classroom library and thanks to my awesome teammate, I think I have finally found a system that is going to work for me and my students. I made a sign showing the category and number (12) for the basket and put a sticker on each book and wrote a number 12 on it the sticker.

First Grade Smiles
Wednesday, November 22, 2017. Not Your Normal KWL. I don’t know about you, but when I went to school to become a teacher I was told that the. Was one of the best ways to begin learning about a new topic. It accomplished the task of activating prior knowledge, had students asking questions and setting a purpose for learning, and then they recorded any new information that they learned. I still think a KWL chart is extremely useful and can be very meaningful for students,. Y using a Schema Chart you don...
