Bill Legg (left) and Dick Kirby take samples of living invertebrates living. On, under and around the rocks on the stream bed. A three foot by three foot area is scoured to free the living insects which are swept up by the current and are caught by the net. Stoneflies nymphs are classified as sensitive to the environment and are found only in well oxygenated waters. To see a close up of these creatures, click on the compartment of interest.

How Much Does It Weigh? There are times when we catch a nice sized fish and we wonder how much does it weigh? There is a formula to determine the weight of a trout if we know how the length and girth of the fish. This formula works for medium size fish with body plan of a trout. It is not accurate for small fish and very large fish. The measurements are in inches and the weight will be in pounds. The formula for the mathematical minded is as follows: Weight = Girth X Girth X Length / 800.

Nutritional Deficiency Strongly Implicated in Increased Steelhead Mortality in Lake Ontario Tributaries. In mid-November, DEC fisheries staff began to receive reports of steelhead swimming erratically in the Salmon River and higher mortality of the species. More recent reports indicate similar behavior in steelhead in other Lake Ontario tributaries.
