November 07, 2013. How Many Pounds of Carrots Can You Harvest Per Square Foot? Friends, I am about to share with you some shocking carrot statistics. The other day, I harvested a 2-foot-by-2-foot patch of carrots from my garden. I stashed my harvest in the fridge until I could deal with it, and tonight I washed, sliced and blanched the carrots, to get them ready for the freezer. From that 4 square feet of growing space, I ended up with three bags of carrots, totaling 8 pounds. EIGHT pounds! If you happen...

September 07, 2011. Sustainable Food: 10 Reasons to Care. My journey to becoming an environmentalist—a designation I’ll wear with pride regardless of any stigmas—didn’t start out with a passion for local, sustainable food. But it quickly went there. How in the world did we get here and how can we turn it around? Here are 10 reasons why I think food is so important, and why I’ve come to care about it. 1 Gardening Is a Gateway Drug. 2 Food Grown the Right Way Is Healthier. 4 Food Relates to Energy. Energy ...

The Rowdy Radish: Garden Watering Tips
http://www.rowdyradish.com/2013/04/garden-watering-tips.html
April 21, 2013. If you’re an advanced gardener or a small-scale farmer, chances are that you have an efficient irrigation system set up for growing food crops. If you’re new to gardening, though, an irrigation system is probably the last thing on your mind (you’re more worried about the basic matters of life vs. death when it comes to your plants). And that’s OK. Even still, you will need to water your crops—and there are a few simple garden watering tips to keep in mind when you do. This is a more obvio...

The Gunter Family: Ready, Set, Chaos
http://gunterclan.blogspot.com/2011/05/ready-set-chaos.html
Wednesday, May 25, 2011. Ready, Set, Chaos. After correcting him and added some offhand joke about popping out another one, the crowd of teachers somewhat dispersed. James and I continued to talk about our kids and he asked the the ages of the girls. After responding with their ages (3 1/2, 2, and 5 months), he laughed and said something to the extent of "Do you have a death wish? Then I picked them up from Cleona's. Although this isn't Madi, it's a perfect reenactment. This lady totally depicts me.

Sunday, November 6, 2011. From School Walls to Prison Walls. I couldn't find what I was looking for so I decided to click on the inmates' pictures in the county's jail. I started going through them one by one, looking at the crimes they had been convicted of. (Slightly morbid, I know.). Wouldn't it be sad if I saw one of my students on here? I thought. About five minutes later, I did. How in the heck did he wind up in this position? Did he not see in himself what I saw in him? Maybe I got through to them.

The Gunter Family: March 2011

Monday, March 7, 2011. The Adventures of Douglas in Waterland. He runs back into the house with no further explanation. At this point, I think three things: 1. You don't call 911 when your house is flooding. 2 Water is probably gushing down the stairs and pouring through the sheet rock seams. 3 I don't have time to deal with insurance companies. When the plumber returns our call, he says he can't fix our shower valve. (I think he was being nice and saving us money.) He alluded to the step by step...I res...

Tuesday, March 6, 2012. Instead of working out like I should be, I am procrastinating. (Don't fret KY and Erin. I'm still going to workout tonight.). This afternoon, Preslyn embarked on an exciting journey- climbing the stairs. For the past several days, Preslyn has become preoccupied with the bottom stair of the staircase. She climbs up the first step, sits, and turns around to look out at the world. We've been trying help her climb to step two and eventually step three. (Big mistake! She quickly got ov...

January 12, 2013. The Power of (Recipe) Language in a Convenience Culture. As a former English teacher and Literature grad student, I think about language often. I think about language’s power. Not just the overt power of a magnificent sentence or essay that jolts the reader into awareness or awe, but of its more subtle power. The way language not only describes and reflects our world, but the way it shapes our world. A recipe for cobbler calls for “Two 12-oz bags frozen mixed berries”. None of the items...
