The Long Horse Ride Blog: November 2014
http://thelonghorseride.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
The Long Horse Ride Blog. From Beijing to London between the Olympics and beyond. Saturday, 22 November 2014. Le Pont Sur Le Fleuve St Laurent. Are those the tracks of heffalumps? I am sure we have been here before. We arrive at the bridge over the St Lawrence. As arranged, the wonderful Jacques Charlesbois (with Sebastian and Martin for moral support) arrived soon after to pick up Lady, catching me scoffing a sandwich provided by Cecile. The weary travellers tucking in. Thursday, 20 November 2014. The e...

The Long Horse Ride Blog. From Beijing to London between the Olympics and beyond. Friday, 27 June 2014. But hopefully it will only be Au Revoir and not Farewell as I was made to feel as if it was a second home. The help and hospitality I received while crossing The Rock was totally overwhelming, and I will treasure many precious memories of my time there. Many many thanks to everyone who helped me on my way - I could not have done it without you! Loving the towel bunny. Tuesday, 24 June 2014. Friday 20th...

The Long Horse Ride Blog: The Black Donellys

The Long Horse Ride Blog. From Beijing to London between the Olympics and beyond. Tuesday, 28 July 2015. In the morning Mary-Lou and Wesley accompanied me on horseback for a few miles. Crossing the river Thames . Wesley on Bailey, his black 8 year old quarter horse gelding, and Mary-Lou on Sharia, her 25 year old chestnut Arabian mare. I had managed to plan my route along quiet back roads for the most part. The Elginfield observatory, which is run by the University of Western Ontario. The leader of the v...

From racing to endurance. The end of the journey. Posted by Tabita under The journey. I hear you say why? I know he’s telling me that he just can’t do it anymore. He can’t do the hill work or the Downs rides anymore, regardless of how much he wants to. All those years of neglect and abuse has started to take its toll, his health just isn’t right and it would be cruel to continue pushing him when he blatantly can’t do it. So, in summary – that’s all folks from my friend Shah. South East Arab Horse Group.

From racing to endurance. Posted by Tabita under The journey. Unfortunately, the cut that Shah got during our last ride turned out to be much deeper and bruised than we thought. So much so that he’s still lame four weeks after the ride. But I’m hoping we don’t have to go that far. So, another setback on our journey. It always seems to be like that, you take five steps forward and four backwards. Posted by Tabita under The journey. It was just a bit of bad luck getting a cut I think. The cut is healin...

From racing to endurance. Posted by Tabita under This and that. I decided a little while ago to start looking for an alternative bit for Shah. I agree that the ‘normal’ jointed snaffle that I ride him in is not a kind bit and it has been known to not suit a lot of arabs that traditionally have small mouths and big tongues. He does a lot of head tossing and I was wondering if a new bit might help. So, our bit journey started this week with a hired PeeWee. Next one on the list to try: Myler. If that still ...

From racing to endurance. Posted by Tabita under The journey. We’ve had a lot of lows lately which is why I’ve not been posting here. Shah has been poorly for quite a while and it’s taken every effort trying to get him well again and at some points I’ve been seriously considering retiring him although he’s only 18 years old. Here’s the story. Early July and Shah’s chronic pastern leukocytoclastic vasculitis. Much better than Cashel. But the cough hung around. It wasn’t too bad to start with, ju...With st...

From racing to endurance. Posted by Tabita under This and that. After nearly five weeks lame I’m glad to report that Shah is now back to normal again and we’ve started our ‘back to action’ training programme. On the vet’s recommendations we started with 10 minutes walking on the road, slowly building up every other day, up to an hour where we are now. We should be back to doing some more rides quite soon. The only problem now is the belly! Posted by Tabita under The journey. South East Arab Horse Group.

The Long Horse Ride Blog: An Angel in Disguise

The Long Horse Ride Blog. From Beijing to London between the Olympics and beyond. Tuesday, 28 July 2015. An Angel in Disguise. Friday May 29th to Sunday 31st. Ellen turned out to be an angel in disguise, and I ended up staying at the Thistledown Equestrian Centre. From left to right: Ellen, Sarah's husband Mario, birthday girl Sarah, son Aidan, Barry. On Sunday Barry and Ellen very generously drove me back to Newmarket to fetch my spare baggage. Unusually for an older woman, Ellen was previously an engin...

The Long Horse Ride Blog. From Beijing to London between the Olympics and beyond. Thursday, 30 July 2015. Into the US of A. And the day Pat drove Lady and me into the USA. Here are Pat and Marlene with the trailer carrying Lady just before we set off. I will miss Canada. The support I have received all the all the way from my start at St John's Newfoundland has been overwhelming, and has strengthened my faith in human nature. Lady had a stall, and Rick's daughter Amy DeLange kindly let me camp in their b...
