french-treasures - History of French fabrics

http://www.french-treasures.com/historical.htm

Historical notes on French fabrics. In France, the ban on printed textiles only spurred the public desire for them. The ensuing craze for printed cottons resulted in secret printing factories hidden in basements or churches and dramatically increased the smuggling of the goods through ports and unguarded borders. Heavy fines were levied for infractions of the law to little avail. Women caught wearing printed cotton clothing were disrobed and the dresses were burned on the spot! Painted and Printed Fabrics.

french-treasures - About french treasures

http://www.french-treasures.com/about.htm

French-treasures was one of the very first textile companies to launch a website. I founded the site in 1999 after having been in business in New York City for several years. This online presence ultimately freed me to travel and to move from New York City to France, since the site could be maintained from almost anywhere! These days, there are many textile dealers on the web - but why not buy from the original - french-treasures.com. Please contact me with any questions or comments. Email:.

A (Miniature) Room of One's Own: December 2012

http://miniroomof1zown.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html

A (Miniature) Room of One's Own. Chronicles the re-creation in miniature of the writing rooms and studios of modernist women writers. And other things as I go along. Wednesday, December 5, 2012. Wouldn't you know it! As part of my obsessive-compulsive behaviour I was cruising antique fabric websites the other day, just idly looking for likely fabrics for Gertrude's chair slipcover. I cam across a number of sellers of french antique fabrics, including French-treasures.com. Undoubtedly someon out there does.

http://french-treasures.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

Nov 3, 2013. French antique bed sheets. Starting in the 1600s, the central government controlled the textile industry in France. Government agents decided who could produce textiles and what they could produce. Bed sheets were manufactured in many regions and in varying styles. The most common bed sheet was woven on narrow looms, so in order to make a sheet that was wide enough to cover a two-person bed, these sheets have a hand-stitched center seam that joined two fabric widths. french-treasures: Shades of green for spring in French homes of the 18th and 19th centuries

http://french-treasures.blogspot.com/2015/03/shades-of-green-for-spring-in-french.html

Mar 18, 2015. Shades of green for spring in French homes of the 18th and 19th centuries. This is a piece of woven silk created for a chair seat, done in bright spring green, mid-19th century. Note the use of symbols - the shell (symbol of the sacred path, but also used as a welcome sign for pilgrims in Medieval times) and the acanthus leaf (symbol of enduring life.). Reddish-orange poppies and white grasses are the motif in this Art Nouveau fabric with a pale leaf-green background. And sold over the years.

Jan 9, 2012. French fabrics and the indienne flower. French textile designers took inspiration from the colorful printed textiles that were imported from India by traders and overseas trading companies in the 17th century. The Indian motifs and colors were re-interpreted and modified in order to more easily sell to French households. These French-designed and French-produced textiles in the East Indian style were called indiennes. Here are several large indienne. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
