The Frugal Bohemian

Saturday, July 30, 2011. On any given Saturday morning spring through fall, weather permitting, as you travel east on the main drag through town, you’ll notice a large hand painted sign on the left. "Honest Joe"*. To the unaware the place looks like any other yard sale. A front yard studded with old ladders, tables filled with stuff, and a friendly guy with a waist bag full of change, ready to say hi. Is the bohemian in me secretly envious of a guy who can make a buck from other people’s discards? Wednes...

The Frugal Bohemian: Let the Buyer Beware

http://frugalbohemian.blogspot.com/2011/05/let-buyer-beware.html

Saturday, May 14, 2011. Let the Buyer Beware. Good things can be used to cloak sneaky practices. So be on the alert when you shop. Buy One, Get One. Inflated prices can make this deal no real deal. Check out generics or coupons or another store on similar items. If you keep a price book, all the better, as you really know when the deal is an honest one. Pricing with a “99 cent” suffix. Zeros scare us. That 99 cents on the end makes us think we’re getting a better deal. Buyer’s reward cards. Giv...And one...

The Frugal Bohemian: December 2010

http://frugalbohemian.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Thursday, December 30, 2010. When I was a kid we lived in the projects. One day I bumped into a classmate and we decided to hang out. She went to ask permission of her folks while I waited a couple houses down. So I considered the options. And I lied. She pushed me away, and stomped back into her house. Even as the pink finger marks and discomfort dissipated, the guilt from lying burned in me. I vowed never to give in that way again, no matter what it cost. Links to this post. The Frugal Bohemian: You Know It’s Really Spring When...

http://frugalbohemian.blogspot.com/2011/05/you-know-its-really-spring-when.html

Thursday, May 19, 2011. You Know It’s Really Spring When. It’s 61 degrees outside and drizzly. The trees are in fairly full leaf, that impossible to paint very green, too much yellow color. Mourning doves nest under the back porch. A cardinal couple flit around the house. Goldfinches dart to and from our neighbor’s thistle feeder. Robin males sing their love-struck hearts out. Dirt comes alive with creatures, smelling like the dirt of childhood, and pollen dusts everything yellow. A ring necked rabbit lo...

The Frugal Bohemian: September 2010

http://frugalbohemian.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, September 30, 2010. Always More to Learn. There’s always more out there to observe and master. And when your life is over, you hope you’ve done the best with what you have, and passed the good stuff on to others. Links to this post. Friday, September 17, 2010. I’ve Got Those Oh So Cobalt Blues. How it got there, I don’t know exactly. Except I do. God put it there for just that day, just as the sun slung low in the west, to hit it just right and shimmer. For me to pick up. Links to this post.

The Frugal Bohemian: February 2011

http://frugalbohemian.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, February 19, 2011. In February it will be. My snowman’s anniversary. With cake for him and soup for me! Happy once, Happy twice. Happy chicken soup with rice. We’ve been experiencing Indian Spring these past few days. Nice walking weather. But if Punxsutawney Phil is to be believed, and how can that sweet faced fellow deceive us? Winter is not over yet. Links to this post. Friday, February 11, 2011. How to Use “Spoiled” Food. 2) Slice mold off cheese. If it's truly spoiled, chuck it. Bu...4) Pu...

Wild Squirrel: Cannibalistic Vegetarianism...or Something Like That

http://wild-squirrel.blogspot.com/2009/04/cannibalistic-vegetarianismor-something.html

A potpourri of anecdotes and information, from motherhood to common "cents", inspired by the provident wild squirrel. Wednesday, April 8, 2009. Cannibalistic Vegetarianism.or Something Like That. LOL Hmmm. maybe if it were tomato blanching water. But a tomato gobbling up green bean remnants might be akin to a human eating a chimp - not cannibalism per se. but almost as horrifying. April 9, 2009 at 1:45 AM. Too funny. I however, save my pasta and potato water and dump it on my plants. Subscribe in a reader.
