plants and seed saving | Frugal gardening

https://garden4free.wordpress.com/2016/02/24/plants-and-seed-saving

A topnotch WordPress.com site. Plants and seed saving. February 24, 2016. I have attended a few workshops and gone to a few seed libraries in Silicon Valley. It is great to see a community dedicated to sharing and saving vegetables seeds for the future. The weather feels like spring and I am planning for a few vegetables for my second raised bed, which is 4′ x 4′. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Garden Bed | Frugal gardening

https://garden4free.wordpress.com/2015/11/07/garden-bed

A topnotch WordPress.com site. November 7, 2015. At home, I assembled the beds and it was easy to do by myself because the bed is heavy. I used one bed and got compost. I estimated that it would take .6 cubic yards to fill it up. Unfortunately, I miscalculated and got .23 cubic yards, but it was fine. I did not want the compost to over fill the bed. Once, I get more compost, I will add vege. Vegetable Garden →. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Address never made public).

Vegetable Garden | Frugal gardening

A topnotch WordPress.com site. January 3, 2016. San Francisco Bay Area. In October 2015, I salvaged redwood and made it into two 4′ x 4′ vegetable beds. I got the wood from my friend and I measured, sawed and screwed it together with the help of my friend. The wood was heavy and a bit worn out, but it was good. I currently, have snow peas, broccoli, kale, radish, spinach, carrots and fennel growing in this vegetables bed. It gets direct sunlight for 4 hours. Plants and seed saving →.

Rain and weather patterns | Frugal gardening

A topnotch WordPress.com site. Rain and weather patterns. January 31, 2014. It is awesome to see rain provide for my vegetable garden. Unfortunately, my garden has not received enough water from the rain. I try to salvage water at home to give to my vegetables. I have lettuce, fava beans, garlic and beans sprouting. They are growing next to kale, swiss chard, dormant (dead) basil and strawberry. The recent warm weather in California has affected the grow of my vegetables. Water and Vegetables →.

Freezer Filling | www.grow-veg.uk

Despite it being the height of summer this weather hasn’t been helping the garden through what should be its period of peak productivity. Temperatures are lower than they should be and there’s little sunlight around at present. But in the face of pouring rain for much of today it was important to get out and harvest various things which had ripened. Gooseberries ripe for picking. A good gooseberry harvest from a humble (cheap! Just a few yards away the blueberry bush is in full production. Between the be...

Harvest Time | www.grow-veg.uk

https://grow-veg.uk/2015/06/27/harvest-time

For me, this is one of the best times of the vegetable growing year. Root crops have been rapidly swelling and there is so much lovely food to pick and enjoy. First out of the ground today was this trio of beetroots: one each of Detroit White, Golden and Chioggia. Colourful trio of beetroots. They ended up in a roasting bag with some swede, also picked today. Alongside are the first mangetout of the year. Beets ready for roasting, with mangetout alongside. Coming In and Going Out | www.grow-veg.uk

https://grow-veg.uk/2015/08/02/coming-in-and-going-out

Coming In and Going Out. It was a big day in the garden today: after lifting various matured crops I was finally able to move the tomato plants out of the plastic tents and into open ground. To me this marks a new phase in the growing year, when the root crops like carrots, potatoes and onions make way for softer summery things like tomatoes and lettuces. Some of today’s. Out of the ground today came. Potatoes, various beetroots and a row of lovely carrots of the variety. Nice big harvest of broad beans.

https://grow-veg.uk/2015/07/20/from-plot-to-plate

From plot to plate. After a couple of weeks away, returning to the vegetable garden this weekend was a mix of anticipation and trepidation. The soaker hoses had done their job well and more or less everything was still alive, but like a lot of growers have experienced this year, a number of things had bolted. One beetroot was taller than me and most of the spinach plants had gone completely to seed. Onions flopped over = ready for picking. Onions trimmed and ready for drying. Garlic, just picked. I would...

Hope you enjoy the gardening ideas, visits from wildlife, butterflies, adventures in organic farming, native plants / wildflowers, heirloom seeds, beekeeping and chickens. Monday, April 25, 2016. Tiger Swallowtail and Prairie Verbena. Nectaring, its' definitive "tiger hash marks" were visible. What a beautiful Tiger Swallowtail. At first, I would commonly misidentify this species with other Swallowtails. Notice the stripes of black - like a tiger's markings. :). Links to this post. Sunday, April 17, 2016.
