Tuesday, January 14, 2014. Confident in Expression: In Our Own Write- Fall, 2013. IOOW Advisor and MS English Teacher. After several submissions and many months of hard work, the student editors of In Our Own Write. The Middle School’s literary magazine, have published the fall edition! A simile is like water. The way it rolls gently. A simile is like lightening. The way it strikes you. A simile is as sweet as a. A simile is like a hand. Gripping you with every word. A simile is like a heart spilling.

Wednesday, December 11, 2013. That is why I love karaoke. For the first song, a couple of girls volunteered to perform to a Paula Abdul or Janet Jackson song – I don't remember which - getting cheers from their friends but not really keeping everyone's attention. And, most importantly, I knew every word to both parts of the duet. Who is contemplating whether it will be ok, or social suicide, to get in front of everyone and meander through a pop song off key? In my eyes, some of the greatest gifts we can ...

The Middle Matters: November 2013
http://middlemattersga.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Monday, November 18, 2013. Middle School Advisor/Advisee Conferences. But then come the reports cards and comments…. As I walked down the hallway last Thursday, overhearing one-on-one conversations between advisors and advisees, I was struck by just how meaningful this time was. Twelve, thirteen, fourteen-year-olds stopped, and with the help of their advisor, thought about and discussed the first few months of the school year:. 8220;Are you on-pace to achieve the goals you set for yourself in September?

The Middle Matters: September 2013
http://middlemattersga.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Friday, September 27, 2013. Back to School Night Opening Remarks. Ken Rogers, Head of Middle School. We started the year by having Community Day during the first week. So I thought it fitting to frame my brief comments tonight around a concept symbolic of community…the neighborhood. One of the great things about healthy neighborhoods is that they are FAMILIAR—. That is certainly true for the MS. Our Community Day was a success. I remain impressed at how often teachers seek each other out to discuss indiv...

The Middle Matters: Noticeably Human
http://middlemattersga.blogspot.com/2013/12/i-am-no-longer-allowedto-do-driving-on.html
Tuesday, December 17, 2013. I am no longer allowed to do the driving on long road trips. I have made my peace with it and I am fine being the snack-finder, navigator, mess cleaner, and DJ. This establishment of roles occurred when my wife realized that I cannot consistently maintain highway speeds. According to her, I slow down when the music slows down, and I also slow down because I “get too distracted.”. I prefer to call it “noticing things.”. You want to ‘notice things’? Let me drive.”. In the midst ...

Wednesday, December 4, 2013. Ms Deb Mersky, DOC Coordinator. He loved every minute of it and even left with a job offer for next summer! It was a fantastic day and I think it is truly the very first step in his business career! On Monday, November 18. There was nary an eighth grader in Middle School. Indeed the hallways were conspicuously devoid of the height, breadth and banter of the Middle School’s “senior” occupants. Where. Where would he or she like to go? Posted by K. Rogers. New to middle school.

Saturday, December 20, 2014. Cairns Installation Inspired by Thea Alvin and Andy Goldsworthy. After Kindergarten practiced stacking stones and painted their collected stones. We finally had decent weather to go outside and install cairns in the woods behind our school. I was so glad we could do this before winter break! The kids worked in small groups to stack their painted stones along a pathway by the creek. . Some of my favorite quotes from this experience. Im playing with rocks! Links to this post.

Saturday, January 24, 2015. Clay Owls in the Making and Thoughts on Craftsmanship. 2014-2015 marks my 4th year teaching full-time elementary art! Now that my curriculum feels pretty established, kids remember certain projects displayed by older students and look forward to making insects on leaves. Clay owls created by making a pinch pot body and scratching-and-attaching. Slabs of clay for the wings, eyes, and beak. Pre-K learns how to make pinch pots. Luckily, the kids did not balk at the idea of spendi...
