Down Syndrome is a genetic condition that causes delays in physical and intellectual development. Persons with Down Syndrome have an extra copy of chromosome 21, and for this reason it is also known as trisomy 21 (3 copies of the 21st chromosome). Every person with DS is a unique individual and may possess the following physical characteristics to different degrees or not at all. Low muscle tone (floppiness). Almond shaped, upward slanting eyes. A single deep crease across the palm.

Most DS diagnoses are made after birth once medical practitioners observe certain physical traits; a DS diagnosis is confirmed with a genetic blood test called Karyotype.
