HIV/AIDs: October 2006
http://generocityhiv.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html
Stories from sierra leone's forgotten. Monday, October 30, 2006. I went to court last week with about ten other people in solidarity with a woman named Rashidatu. Rashidatu is a member of SWAASL’s network for positive women. Three weeks ago her landlord beat her unconscious. He claims it was because she hadn’t paid her rent. Others suspect it had more to do with her HIV status. It’s not as crazy as it sounds. Rashidatu’s landlord did not turn up. So the case was adjourned with the promise that he wou...

Maro and simon's journey in sierra leone. Thursday, August 17, 2006. Well, we're finally here! It was like a sprawling chapel, its colourful icons - the fishermen, the prostitutes, the orphans, came in and out of the light almost like a never-ending dream. On Tuesday, Alice, VSO's programme for HIV/governance picked us up with Lynda, the receptionist. We were introduced to staff, given our first month's money, and talked through the programme and health and safety issues. For now, all our love,. And othe...

generocity: Introduction
http://generocity.blogspot.com/2006/02/introduction.html
Bringing global justice home. Saturday, February 04, 2006. After four decades of upheaval and civil war, Sierra Leone, once the Athens of Africa , is now the third poorest country in the world. Yet for the first time since gaining independence from the British in 1961, a just and equitable future is at last conceivable. Where we come in. Our work with VSO. Takes us to Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. Here, as well as in adjacent rural areas, Maro. Where you come in. That’s what Generocity is about,...

Sierra Leone: September 2006
http://generocitysierra.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html
News, opportunity and politics from the ground. Tuesday, September 19, 2006. Really quite tired today. I’m working pretty flat out; added to which, my office moved last week and is now 2 hours away (1 and a half in good traffic; rare). So the days are long, though it’s likely I’ll work away from the office once or twice a week. But what’s Britain’s role in all this? The UK’s Department for International Development supposedly has huge influence over how this ex-colony is run far more than the UN. But...
