Women and participatory culture. March 15, 2016. I was recently intrigued by a conversation in my place of work. A male colleague asked if we enjoyed the new ‘female look’ to the Time Out magazine. This was asked as he was perusing the ‘New Day’ newspaper which he also felt has a feminine feel to its layout and content. What was this female look? Harris’ article explores how young women develop their own participatory culture and engage in topics and debates that interest them. The mere fact th...I recen...

Positioning, is it a good thing? January 24, 2016. The influence of games? January 22, 2016. January 22, 2016. Today my school had a PSHE day, which stands for Personal, Social and Heath education. A group called GAV. Were invited in to talk to 11-12 year olds about the dangers of gangs and knife crime. The day was lead by a facilitator who engaged in various activities with the students, to give them information but also to involve them in their own learning. January 22, 2016. January 22, 2016. Man in the mirror. January 30, 2016. January 30, 2016. 8220;If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change” Michael Jackson circa 1987. The idea of holding up a mirror to what I’m currently doing and asking myself: Who is my audience? What is my online persona? I’m also aware that my relationship with my blogs can and quite possibly will change. At the moment I’m certainly keeping elements of my academic, professional and personal life separate....One question ...

Digital literacy and learning trajectories. February 29, 2016. Having read ‘New literacies as multiply placed practices: expanding perspectives on young people’s literacies across home and school’ by Bulfin and Koutsogiannis (2012), I was wondering where current educators place digital literacy. There has been a tendency in some of the research that I’ve been reading to locate this type of literacy in the realm of the ICT teacher. I do think that we often package assessments with different tasks that may...

Once upon a time. February 8, 2016. February 8, 2016. When there was less fear in my school of using social media and when my colleague and I wanted to motivate year 11 Media students, we made a group on Facebook. We made the group secure in that it was open to our students but they didn’t have to friend each other or us teachers to join the group. Therefore they had no access to our personal pictures or posts and we had no access to theirs (as long as they had their privacy settings on). I am however dr...

February 12, 2016. I wanted to make my educational blog. Easy to use and traverse, when I tried to create an additional page to organise my posts by theme – such as writing and studying A Christmas Carol, I found that the page didn’t allow me to add new posts or tag my work. An initial google for the answer showed that I either have to upgrade my account and install a widget/plugin or just let it go…. Since I don’t have the time or money to invest in a VLE or website, this will have to do. Notify me of n...
