A Passage to London

Monday, 15 September 2008. Filled with excitement and loaded down with supplies for our longest train journey yet (72hrs) we board the Trans-Siberian to Moscow. Our cabin mates are two friendly, middle-aged Irkutskian ladies named Alla and Nina. In an embarrassing faux pas, I completely forgot the local etiquette of eating a morsel of food in between shots of vodka, and set about fashioning a small sandwich. Gill laughed at me when we realised the error. How English, they must have thought! Gestures towa...

A Passage to London: March 2008

http://gillandsally.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html

Saturday, 29 March 2008. Monday 17th March – Agonda. Tuesday 18th March – Agonda. After a miserable night being violently sick (I suspect from a dodgy prawn), I convalesced all day with probably one of the best sea views one could hope for from any sick bed. Wednesday 19th March – Palolem. Thursday 20th march – Palolem. Friday 21st march – Anjuna. In fact, where are all the people? Saturday 22nd March – Anjuna. Sunday 23rd March – Arambol. Monday 24th March – Arambol. Tuesday 25th March – Arambol. We arr...

A Passage to London: Mongolia

http://gillandsally.blogspot.com/2008/09/mongolia.html

Wednesday, 10 September 2008. Excited and loaded up with non-perishable food and vodka the unnamed team set out in a battered Soviet-style van over the bumpy roads (if you could call them that), into the great unknown. I mean, what else does one do in these situations? After this had been passed around, and Sterling lifted the mood further by serenading the night on his guitar with the “stuck in a river blues”, we resolved to roll up our jeans and wade to a nearby spit (mainly because everybo...In high-s...

Wednesday, 30 April 2008. Wedding season meant that all the trains from Bundi to. Were fully booked so we spent a long day travelling on two of. 8217;s dreaded buses, changing at Jaipur. We set off at 7am and when we finally arrived at our guesthouse, its rooftop view of the Taj. Mahal was shrouded in darkness. The next day we rose just after the sun to eat breakfast and drink in t. We actually rather liked. Where we’d arranged to hook up with Bernard. The next day Mr Singh, Bernard’s driver, took ...

A Passage to London: June 2008

http://gillandsally.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 24 June 2008. As an antidote to the chaos and filth of the capital we spent one night in this Unesco heritage, traffic-free town that is a perfectly preserved miniature version of what Kathmandu used to be like 100 years ago. Bhaktapur’s Durbar Square is littered with ancient monuments, palaces, temples and gorgeous quaint architecture, which we had practically all to ourselves, being the rainy off-season. They were so sweet and I felt gutted we will have to break our promise, and hope it doesn'...

A Passage to London: August 2008

http://gillandsally.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 26 August 2008. An ancient walled city with a pulsating modern heart, Xian is most famous as the home of the Terracotta Warriors. The subterranean army silently guarded the tomb of China’s first Emperor Qin Shi Huang since 210 BC until they were discovered by a farmer digging a well in 1974. We saw the biggest/oldest? Bell/drum. erm, perhaps I've spent so long in China now I'm getting my superlatives confused. Well anyway, whatever we saw was very big and old, and the shows were admirabl...Peopl...

Thursday, October 30, 2008. I never really wrote that much about Mongolia, but Gill took some wonderful pictures and Sally wrote as eloquently as she always does. Friday, September 26, 2008. Capitulation: pictures of me. For those that have told me that they like my pictures but would like to see what I look like.yes, I haven't shaved in 3 weeks. Oohhhhhhh mannnn, let's make a big deal. 1 In my guesthouse in Namche. Perfect if I didn't despise myspace. 2 On a hike today up to my first view of Everest. This isn't it, but it sure is purty. Waiting for the plane in Kathmandu:. This is the airport in Lukla. Note the downward slant:. A view of Namche from the top:.

http://westuntotheeast.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, November 27, 2008. Things are horrific in Mumbai. I am so sad to hear about what is happening. As for me, I am safe in northern India, far from the current situation. I am supposed to travel to Mumbai by plane on Monday, but the plans are obviously tentative at this point. My next destination after Mumbai is Bangkok (albeit for 24 hours), and there seems to be some serious unrest there as well. If you aren't aware of what's going on. Thursday, November 13, 2008. There are a lot of things that I...

Sunday, January 4, 2009. Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto. I love this part of Japan. This area, in southwest Japan, is called Kansai, and with the rail pass I got I can just bounce around. I’m based in Osaka in a capsule hotel, which serves two functions: hilarious and cheap. But, from here, I can make it to Kobe in 23 minutes and Kyoto in 45 (or 20 on the bullet train). So what have I done with all of this opportunity? Girl from the hotel came in to the bar to meet the people I was playing darts with. Small world.

Asiatic: The constant change

http://westuntotheeast.blogspot.com/2008/12/oh-man.html

Tuesday, December 2, 2008. I'm in Mumbai now. Things are fine. I was supposed to leave on Friday for a 24 hour layover in Bangkok before getting to Hong Kong for the week. Considering there were thousands of people in my way (or one now ex-PM, depending on how you see the situation), Bangkok was no longer an option, and Thai Air had canceled my flight. Today I had to figure it all out. Find a flight back to the US (now booked) and deal with how I'd deal with Thailand. I've been off the radar for quite so...

Friday, December 12, 2008. Arrived in Sydney after about a week in Hong Kong. Incredible. Off to Tahiti tomorrow for a week of surf, then cruising with the family around the islands the next week for my dad's birthday. Yes, this is the ridiculous sounding part of the trip, just in case the previous months haven't been crazy enough. Just wanted to say hi.I'm alive. I'll write sometime, I think. Friday, January 2, 2009. Lately I've been a man of few words, I know. As I've said multiple times over the course of the last two months or so, I think that will change. This morning I picked up the suits I had made and caught my flight to the place in which I reside, Osaka. I get to see all the celebrity endorsements that they don't talk about in the US. What brought this to mind is that right next to this computer terminal is a vending machine selling coffee. On the bottom of the machine is an ...
