Red, Bike and Green: January 2012
http://redbikegreen.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Red, Bike and Green. Sweden Is Getting the Next Bike Superhighway. If you want to find an unassuming place where bicycling is a way of life and nobody makes a big deal about it, head south. The south of Sweden, that is, where the small university town of Lund has a big bicycle habit. They just don't advertise it. It is the country's best biking city - ahead of both Stockholm, the capital; Gothenburg, the second largest Swedish metropolitan area, and a host of smaller bike-friendly burgs. The proposed bic...

Red, Bike and Green: Top 10 Bike Books for the New Year
http://redbikegreen.blogspot.com/2012/01/top-10-bike-books-for-new-year.html
Red, Bike and Green. Top 10 Bike Books for the New Year. Author Eban Weiss didn't invent snark, he certainly perfected it - first in his BikeSnob NYC blog, and later in this best-selling book. Weiss is super-snarky, dead-on observant, and sometimes very, very funny. He stereotypes the bike world to within an inch of its bike pedals, and it makes for an amusing and informative read. If you want more of the mercilessness, Weiss continues on with the BikeSnob NYC blog. Author Sue Stauffacher became entrance...

The planter’s naturally porous earthenware allows water in the central chamber to seep into the surrounding soil. The plant’s need for water regulates this capillary action. Grub green. go. Composting: What’s the Big Deal and Why Should I Bother? December 26, 2012. Vermicompost: yummy AND nutritious! So, why do I bother? The City Bin indoor composter – would this make you compost? 1 Composting reduces waste = less land needed for landfills. 2 Composting slows down the climate change trajectory. 3 Composting protects bodies of water from eutrophication and algal blooms by producing awesome fertilizer. Have you ever seen ponds covered in slimy goo of an unnaturally green color?

Grub green. go. About Friggin’. Time. July 12, 2012. I’m going 220 mph! Photo credit: Associated Press. Offers round-trip service for around$90 at convenient pick-up and drop-off locations, but travel time was approximately 6 hours, the same duration as driving. For a short weekend jaunt, I did not want to spend the majority of my time on a bus. I also looked up travel by Amtrak. I was expecting a 6-8 hour trip, you know, something that is at least equivalent to driving/shuttling. But 10 to 11 hours!

Grub green. go. Let the Experiment Begin! June 7, 2012. Dents and dings: I bite my thumb at you! Thus, it was not without a good amount of hesitation that I eventually bit the bullet. Many concerns flashed through my mind, some legitimate, many absurd: what if there was a giant flood/earthquake/epidemic/War of the Worlds-style alien invasion and I needed to flee ASAP! Grub green. go. Wanna see the bacteria that hang out in your mouth? April 18, 2014. I recently came across the MicrobeScope. I teach biology at a local community college. Learning to use a microscope is one of the most worthwhile – and frustrating – skills we teach in the laboratory course. Students are often not used to the idea of having to fumble and fail while searching for a tiny, translucent cell (or, worse,. Click to share on Google (Opens in new window). Grub green. go. Be A City Earthworm! November 29, 2012. I apologize for my looooooong absence. I thought that graduating from grad school would free me to blog more, but instead I have learned how inconvenient it is to blog at work without getting caught. Lest you think that the reason I haven’t blogged has. Much to do with my day job though, let me tell you about what I have been (excitedly) busy with. The City Bin. Photo Credit: Deborah Lee Proano.
