Thoughts from a small Pacific island. Saturday, August 9, 2008. Request for school supplies. In case anyone reading was interested in helping out St. Cecilia faculty and students, I have compiled a list of school supplies that could be put to use at the school. These supplies are either not available on our island or are pretty expensive if you can find them:. Teachers' lesson plan books. These supplies can be sent to my address:. Chuuk, FM 96942. Weno Caitlin: November 2008
http://wenocaitlin.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
Thoughts from a small Pacific island. Friday, November 7, 2008. I myself was at first completely skeptical. A tidal wave? I thought we were protected from tidal waves by the reef. My apartment can’t be more than 200 yards from the ocean, will it survive? If a tidal wave hits, will the bank still be open? 8221; (I will swim! What if I die here? Is this seriously happening? 8221; He says, “We sent the kids home, you know it’s just a drill, right? How did no one know? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Weno Caitlin: April 2009

Thoughts from a small Pacific island. Sunday, April 5, 2009. Fiin Chuuk" - Chuukese Woman. 8221; To me this demonstrated exactly what the project now seeks to deal with- a lack of a social definition of what constitutes domestic violence and sexual assault. The women’s council members know that there is violence in the homes of many, some even say most here. What to call this violence, how to challenge it, and recognizing it as an infringement of human rights is what we are now working on.

Weno Caitlin: February 2009
http://wenocaitlin.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html
Thoughts from a small Pacific island. Sunday, February 22, 2009. Running in a skirt. St Cecilia had its track and field days this week. Two days of too much sun and a lot of small children running. It’s always an exciting time for the students. The staff and students divide up the school into 4 color teams: red, yellow, blue, and green, and compete against each other in sprinting, relays, tug o war, etc. 2-All children run barefoot. 3-Girls run in skirts, sometimes two skirts, with shorts underneath.

Songs to sing and tales to tell: August 2006
http://kcpanek.blogspot.com/2006_08_01_archive.html
Songs to sing and tales to tell. Thursday, August 24, 2006. A big crucifix around their necks, ringing bells, and spewing chicha. However peculiar the people’s beliefs are to us, the people exhibit a kind of sincere devotion we could all learn something from. God is great, and as much as we try to describe, understand, and get to know Him, the totality of His infinite love is bigger than any box we could try to fit Him into. Couldn’t there also be an infinite number of ways to experience His love? In mas...

Songs to sing and tales to tell. Wednesday, January 24, 2007. One of the toughest things about being a teacher is never knowing what our students really get out of our classes, and we just have to have faith that somebody learns something from us, and if they learn something about life rather than about the subject I am teaching, then all the better. 1 What is your mailing address? C/o Padre René Cardozo. I love getting mail, so write often! 2 How did you decide to go there? 3 Who are you helping? Of cou...

Songs to sing and tales to tell: September 2006
http://kcpanek.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html
Songs to sing and tales to tell. Tuesday, September 19, 2006. So two Sundays ago I accompanied Omar, one of the Jesuit novices, to the rural community of Chapapani for a eucharistic celebration. The community is about a 45 minute walk into the campo from Tiraque. We arrived to find villagers waiting outside the little chapel for the celebration to begin. Many of them had themselves walked a considerable distance from outer reaches of the community. Blessed are you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is ...

Songs to sing and tales to tell: December 2006
http://kcpanek.blogspot.com/2006_12_01_archive.html
Songs to sing and tales to tell. Thursday, December 28, 2006. It was tough, I’ll admit it. My first Christmas away from my family. But sharing this holiday with the people with whom I live and work everyday is certainly part of the Christmas spirit, and Christ was a present as ever this day. Christmas morning I woke up expecting to go to mass at 9:00, then serve hot chocolate to the kids. As is my usual state of being, I didn’t know what was going on, or when things changed, but at 9:30 (I know by no...
