Awake in New England. Thursday, February 27, 2014. St Pete Beach, British Pubs and Italian Groceries. Thursday is windy so not so good for a beach day. We decide to explore downtown St. Petersburg, a seafood market and an Italian grocery. The seafood place, Save On Seafood. Is a bargain with lots of choices, and lots of local, fresh fish. We buy crab claws and shrimp, and both are delicious. The Italian grocery, Mazzaro's. Tuesday, February 25, 2014. Out and About in Gulfport, Florida. Mark and Mary are ...

Awake in New England. Friday, March 28, 2014. Skating the Marginal Way. Lee and I have joined a couple of Meetup Groups. The one we really seem to like is in the Seacoast area near Portsmouth. They are called The Striders and they like to go on walks and they like to eat. Right up our alley! We were supposed to walk a path along the ocean in Ogunquit, Maine called the Marginal Way. Ogunquit was a really cute town, just starting to wake up from winter. The restaurant where we ate, Five-O Shore Road. PF Ch...

Awake in New England. Monday, January 20, 2014. I can't draw. No really. I love art, and I admire my friends that are artists so much, but the idea of trying to represent the world around me using a pencil or a brush mystifies me. Its seems magical. How is it that those squiggly lines and brush strokes, applied in a particular way, turn into something beautiful or interesting? I trust my camera and I trust my ability with words to help me represent something I am thinking or feeling, but art? First we ha...

Awake in New England: October 2014

Awake in New England. Wednesday, October 15, 2014. I wanted to go zip lining for a long time. I. Know why. I don't really like heights all that much, but I do like being out in the woods and nature. The thought of zipping around the tree tops, maybe waving at a squirrel or two, admiring the views and challenging myself physically appealed to me for some reason. So I added zip lining to my bucket list. Would take us on our expedition. We arrived, checked in, acquired our gear, helmets and Gopro camera....

Awake in New England. Thursday, January 29, 2015. The Great Blizzard of 2015. When the media gets as hot and bothered about a storm as they did about this one, it brings out the skeptic in me. And if I lived in New York City I’m sure I would be rolling my eyes and pooh-poohing the weatherman. But even so we went to the grocery store with the other crazed masses and made sure our pantry was well stocked. A good time to make spaghetti, Lee declared. Sounds good to me! That’s over 2 inches an hour, ve...

Awake in New England. Monday, December 2, 2013. A Visit to Green Machine Farm. We had a great thanksgiving at Sarah and Erik's house in Minneapolis. The day after thanksgiving we bundled up and tumbled into the car for a drive down to Zumbrota, Minnesota to visit Lee's sister Cathy on their new family farm. Where could they go and live out this farming dream? The decision was made to purchase an old farm in Minnesota. Andrew has a wonderful blog, Green Machine Farm. All about the trials and adventures in...

Awake in New England: September 2014

Awake in New England. Sunday, September 28, 2014. I am on the plane, returning from a week spent in St Louis, preparing my mom's apartment for sale. I have sorted through books, papers, photos; opened drawers one last time; wandered through closets; stood in the office lost in thought. Shipped to Cody: a large chrome vise; to Daniel: a Shofer; to Sarah: a Le. One night I meet my cousin Michael for a drink at at Brio's. One day I meet my friend Sarah for lunch at Chipotle one more time. One evenin...Delma...

Awake in New England. Wednesday, November 26, 2014. Post Marathon Race Processing. I love writing about my marathons. They are such momentous occasions for me and I have such a feeling of accomplishment. And yet.when I read those articles online, on active.com. Or competitor, or grab a copy of Runners World at the airport, I'm confronted by reality. But there are women in my age group running under 4 hour marathons, lots of them! But running, oh running. The New York Marathon this year was so differe...

Awake in New England. Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Such a Late Spring. When I left for Nashville on May 3rd it didn't feel, or look, like May. Everything was about two weeks later than normal. My crocuses and snowdrops came up on schedule. I think they are less influenced by temperatures and more by changes in light. But my magnolia bushes? No blooms yet, and they are my earliest flowering plant. No daffodils. No strawberry blossoms. Virginia Bluebells Just Beginning to Bloom. It's been kind of dry, which seem...

Awake in New England. Monday, March 30, 2015. Sarah and Erik Visit Florida. Sarah and Erik show up on a Thursday evening. It's fun to have guests to cook with, try out new restaurants, explore this little town. On Friday we decide to go back to the Dunedin Farmer's Market and then head to Clearwater beach. It is a beautiful hot sunny day. On a Friday afternoon. No they leave it tied and that's the end of the game. After all it doesn't count, it's just spring training! We get home around 6:30. The dogs sp...
