Living Geography: 3D printed volcanoes
http://livinggeography.blogspot.com/2015/08/3d-printed-volcanoes.html
Friday, 7 August 2015. An interesting story on the use of 3D printing. This time, it's with the aim of helping people plot evacuation routes, and appreciate the risks that they face in different areas of the volcano. Been looking at this technology for some time now, and waiting for its appearance at a reasonable cost, for use in the classroom. I've worked on a few projects, most recently the INTEL Internet of Things DISTANCE project, where we made use of it. Posted by Alan Parkinson. EU funded project I...

Living Geography: Alan Garner unbound...
http://livinggeography.blogspot.com/2015/08/alan-garner-unbound.html
Friday, 7 August 2015. If the rocks, caves, lakes, fens, bogs and dens of the land of Britain had a voice, it would sound like Alan Garner telling a story.”. Over the summer, one of the things I've done is contribute to a 'kickstarter' style project on a website called 'Unbound', which is aimed at getting books published, and which has now been fully funded, so will be going ahead. This is a very special book. As it is a tribute to the author Alan Garner. Co-ordinated by Erica Wagner. It’s so impor...

Living Geography: How to build a city
http://livinggeography.blogspot.com/2015/08/how-to-build-city.html
Monday, 10 August 2015. How to build a city. I was drawn to this article by Stuart Jefferies. In the Guardian's excellent section of articles on cities. I'm also keen on using gaming such as SimCity. And others to explore how cities are created and managed. This is something that goes back many years to some of the early simulation games used in the classroom. I have SimCity 4 on my iMac but sadly little time to explore it. The article provides 20 steps towards building a great city. Suggest to your geog...

Musings on evidence and teaching EBM by Terry Shaneyfelt. Author Archives: Terry Shaneyfelt. August 23, 2016. Tarnished Gold Chapter 4: Beating The Odds. Finally, a chapter I somewhat agree with. This chapter discussed the difficulties in understanding probability. The examples they use aren’t good analogies for clinical probabilities but are interesting nonetheless. August 19, 2016. Tarnished Gold Chapter 3: Prove It. August 16, 2016. Tarnished Gold Chapter 2: Populations are not people. There is some m...

Musings on evidence and teaching EBM by Terry Shaneyfelt. December 3, 2013. Reading Journal Article Abstracts Isn’t As Bad As I Thought. Physicians mainly read the abstract of a journal article (JAMA 1999;281:1129). I must admit I am guilty of this also. Furthermore, I would bet that the most often read section of the entire article is the conclusions of the abstract. We are such a soundbite society. Follow Blog via Email.
