This operation is designed to keep the population of the salmon up, so they use controlled spawning to harvest and fertilize the eggs, control the growth until they release the fry back into the waters. We stopped at the Wasilla visitor center, where they also had a Univ. of Alaska agricultural experimental and show garden, with lots of beautiful flowers and some of the biggest cabbages and kale plants we've ever seen. They had a display of statues of some of the record breaking big veggies they had grown- don't think the pictures will do this justice, but just imagining an 18 pound carrot is mind-blowing!
