Random notes and thoughts, mostly about Haskell these days, of a middle-aged programmer. Sunday, July 20, 2014. Flashback, Part Two. Last time we found that our program to count ways to make change, while much better than the engineering class's brute force nested DO loops, isn't up to snuff. There is a better way, it turns out. If you look at the Rosetta Code entry for this problem, which they call "Count the Coins". The other Haskell program takes a different approach:. Where addCoin c oldlist = newlist.

Installing Arch Linux on a MacBook Air 2013. Feb 24, 2016. In short: because it’s fun. On a more serious note, because it allows me to use xmonad. Tweak it and learn more Haskell. Especially now that I’ve got the wonderful Haskellbook. To help me. I also would like to learn more about Linux and improve my understanding of how it works. I need to mention that there is a tiling window manager for OS X that is similar to xmonad, called Amethyst. But I like xmonad better. MacBook page from Arch Linux Wiki.

Pro-“Functor” – SuperGinBaby

All of my systems come to naught. March 3, 2015. March 3, 2015. But many of us who were longtime students of philosophy defended the practices by arguing that the jargon has a purpose. Depending on the context, the jargon might be used to convey a specific, precise point that would be impossible to convey fully with a different, more common, less precise word. I’ve been thinking about the latter case, though, over the past several days, and I think it’s less clear why that would be valuable. I have a lay...

Haskell Detour | MatthewRhone.com
http://matthewrhone.com/2016/haskell-detour
Sep 20, 2016. I have been interested in functional programming languages for some time now. Especially Elixir. I recently began to listen to some of the Changelog Podcast. Episodes and ran across an interesting interview with the creators of Haskell Programming from first princples. It is from a linguist and a Haskell programmer, the linguist never programmed before Haskell or was very much into computers. It seems very inspired by some of the same philosophy of Launch School. It seems a lot of things ha...

Aging Nerd Notes: "I want my xfce...."

Random notes and thoughts, mostly about Haskell these days, of a middle-aged programmer. Tuesday, March 03, 2015. I want my xfce.". Sorry, Mr. Knopfler, it doesn't scan- but it is the truth. I am now the proud owner of two Raspberry Pi 2s, computers we would have killed for back in the 80s. I have "Raspbian" running on them. (It's a version that apparently will run on the 1 (an ARMv6) and on the 2 (a four-core ARMv7); I definitely want to build it targeting the ARMv7.). I'd love to hear them. Subscribe t...
