JRMC 8350 Health and Medical Journalism: Ahead of the curve in Athens, GA
http://jrmc8350.blogspot.com/2008/03/ahead-of-curve-in-athens-ga.html
Monday, March 24, 2008. Ahead of the curve in Athens, GA. Last week closed with a flurry of news stories about how the rich are not only getting richer but also living longer than poor people in America. These stories were triggered by a new analysis of Department of Health and Human Services data conducted by GK Singh and M. Siahpush. On the plus side, we've been engaged in a community-wide study of poverty for nearly two years now and have plans for addressing it. Partners for a Prosperous Athens h...

JRMC 8350 Health and Medical Journalism: My secret love affair with Judah Folkman
http://jrmc8350.blogspot.com/2008/01/my-secret-love-affair-with-judah.html
Monday, January 21, 2008. My secret love affair with Judah Folkman. Dr Judah Folkman, one of the world’s most creative and important cancer researchers, died in the Denver airport on January 15. I heard the news early the next morning on NPR and immediately turned to the obituary. In the New York Times. To be honest, we were together only four times in 17 years. But that was enough. He was an honorable man. Six years later, Judah’s work had become incredibly famous and my friend Bob Cooke published...

JRMC 8350 Health and Medical Journalism: Sunday miscellany
http://jrmc8350.blogspot.com/2007/09/sunday-miscellany.html
Sunday, September 30, 2007. Today's "@issue" section of the. In her new book, Davis argues that the so-called "war on cancer" has spotlighted diagnostic tests and novel therapies while soft-pedaling big money carcinogens like tobacco. Although I think that tobacco is the single biggest modifiable risk factor for cancer, Davis once published studies shifting the blame away from tobacco and onto environmental pollutants. But hey, it's all about learning as you go. One final note, sparked. By Red and Black's.

JRMC 8350 Health and Medical Journalism: Drought and disease
http://jrmc8350.blogspot.com/2007/10/drought-and-disease.html
Sunday, October 7, 2007. If I'd known I was going to live so long, I would have taken better care of myself. If I'd known we were going to run out of water by Christmas, I would have taken shorter showers and never, ever rinsed dishes under running water. When we're healthy and the reservoirs are full, we assume it will always be so. Frightened by a heart attack or the threat of taps run dry, we vow to do better. But when the crisis is over, do we really stop eating fries or get that leaky tap fixed?

JRMC 8350 Health and Medical Journalism: Mental dynamite
http://jrmc8350.blogspot.com/2008/02/mental-dynamite.html
Saturday, February 2, 2008. Of course the forces of darkness try to bring down the operation. But Bartelby counters by arguing that the key to real learning is picking something you care passionately about and pursuing it on your own. I couldn't agree more. Posted by Patricia Thomas. I watched part of that movie over the weekend too, while at a classmate's apartment. I couldn't watch the whole movie- had to leave to do school work. But the parts I saw were funny. Lewis Black is comedic gold. Medical Jour...

JRMC 8350 Health and Medical Journalism: More jolt than Jittery Joe's

Tuesday, September 4, 2007. More jolt than Jittery Joe's. Admit it, you got quite an adrenaline rush when Dr. Dan Colley feigned sudden death while describing the worst consequences of Chagas disease. I know I did! Slides for his excellent presentation, "What reporters need to know about covering infectious disease," will soon be linked to the syllabus posted on the KnightHealth teaching page. In the August 13 issue,. Posted by Patricia Thomas. September 7, 2007 at 5:02 PM. This blog was created for heal...

JRMC 8350 Health and Medical Journalism: Keep it simple
http://jrmc8350.blogspot.com/2007/10/keep-it-simple.html
Monday, October 29, 2007. This is a melancholy week for people in my profession because former. Reporter Jerry Bishop, one of the greatest science writers ever, died last Friday at age 76. Tributes are mounting at http:/ blogs.wsj.com/health. Where Jerry's colleague Ron Winslow posted an elegant obituary of his friend and mentor. That is what readers really want to know, and we must remember to ask. Posted by Patricia Thomas. Federal, State, and City leaders could sure take a lesson from that story.
