Calgary Trip – Continued. Musical Chairs →. August 25, 2012 · 3:39 pm. Exit the Penny (2). In April, shortly after I arrived in Ottawa ( https:/ hogline.wordpress.com/2012/04/07/observing-ottawa/. I posted that one of the differences in Canada was that they were eliminating the penny. It took until this week for me to visit the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa, where they don’t make pennies, but they haven’t for some time, until this year. I’ll explain it all in a moment. Spelunking the “Diefenbunker”. State Department Memories →. July 27, 2013 · 11:32 pm. 1000 Islands, no waiting…. Cruise boats ply the river among the islands, and I’ve meant to take one a few times, but weather or timing stopped me, until recently when the CLO sponsored a trip to two of the biggest islands and their castles. The secret stairwell of Singer Castle. Next is Singer Castle, built as a summer retreat. The bridge and tower to the right was the covered entrance for people arriving by boat. You a...

1000 Islands, no waiting…. What Kind of Day This Has Been →. March 4, 2014 · 9:52 pm. It has been (almost) six months since I semi-voluntarily left the State Department. Since then, I’ve been on sabbatical, figuring out what to do next. I’ve done some traveling to Italy, Greece, Montenegro and Albania (and want to do more), and spent a lot of time thinking about my five years in service to my country. Service. Moreover, I felt I had something beyond many people to offer. As I was unable to write ...IR...

Newer posts →. August 12, 2012 · 2:37 pm. Calgary Trip – Continued. I posted this one before, but I have to tell the story. I’m not a photographer, but I’ve learned a few tricks to make photos interesting. One is to put something in the foreground, like an overhanging branch from a tree. Service Centered: Thoughts on public service while exploring D.C. and the world. Tuesday, May 27, 2014. Old town and Blue Mosque. Inside of the Hagia Sophia. Originally built in 537. More Hagia Sophia - it is truly one of the most stunning buildings I've ever been inside. Storm clouds float in as we enjoyed the views from the Asian side of the Bosphorus. Floating down the Golden Horn with a crescent moon above. Hagia Sophia lit up at night. View of the old town from the hotel roof. I'm Not Giving Up My N...

Service Centered: Thoughts on public service while exploring D.C. and the world. Monday, November 11, 2013. Outside of the office, I've been lucky to score some amazing invites to some great events. First on that list was the Season 2 Premier of the Norwegian/Netflix show Lilyhammer. So wonderful and full. I love that Norwegians fully embrace a low-key evening at home with friends over a simple home-made dinner followed by coffee and a rousing game of Ticket to Ride. I was warned more than once t...Discl...

Service Centered: Thoughts on public service while exploring D.C. and the world. Tuesday, September 2, 2014. A Long Ride (or Many). To getting to the top of Grefsenkollen, one of Oslo's favorite cycling challenges. Since I last wrote about becoming a bike lady. Proof I did it! Me and my trusty bike riding partner/guru (and our bikes) enjoy a post-ride meal - Kebab from Carmel Grill. I am officially obsessed. A group of ladies and their bikes enjoy a mid-ride snack. Service Centered: Thoughts on public service while exploring D.C. and the world. Thursday, January 9, 2014. Speaking of skis, I used the day after Christmas to take my 10-year old niece up to the local ski hill and get some skiing in myself. 49 Degrees North hasn't changed one bit since I first learned how to ski there 22 years ago (yikes! As for resolutions, I'm sure I have some. 49 Degrees North, an amazing view, and a few lucky souls. Flying into Seattle at Sunset. Life at the Cabin. Wanderings of a C...
