Gently recording the amazing life of honeybees as I experience it. I’ve Never Seen More Locust Trees. May 27, 2015. Locust blossoms — delicious for bees and humans! They’re blooming and, if you look for them, you’ll see them everywhere . . . and that is great news for honeybees. Yes, locust trees are very much in bloom right now and they are not only pretty to look at, but they are also great to appreciate as they are in the sweet spot for honeybees at this time of year. Gently recording the amazing life of honeybees as I experience it. July 31, 2015. It is so much fun to watch honeybees gather pollen. I never seem to get tired of following the girls around as they travel from flower to flower, picking up pollen, collecting it in the pollen baskets on their legs and then moving on to a nearby flower to keep going until they’re ready to return to their hive. As I watch the girls continue their pollen collection, I imagine they’re smiling with today’s find. You are comment...

Four are better than one! | honeybeeswax

Gently recording the amazing life of honeybees as I experience it. Four are better than one! June 29, 2015. This year’s bee season has afforded me with the great opportunity to try hive splits with the goal of generating new hives from strong current hives. If left as it, the hive would choose the strongest queen from these cells to stay, while the original queen would leave with about half of the population to seek a new home elsewhere. Rainy weather made me concerned that the new queen may not have bee...

A lovely North-facing aspect, nicely sheltered from the strongest of the prevailing winds. Lots of hives, lots of bees. They are all thriving. My little orchard is simply abuzz these days. These are the boxes which sit on top of the main hive boxes, where honey is collected and stored. L – a cross between a screwdriver and crowbar used to help prise the boxes apart or lever out the frames, cos the bees keep glueing them down with a sticky glue called propolis. A Journey into the world of Beekeeping. October 14, 2016. New hive, all good. I would help him – I needed a hive, he would be helping me more than anything else. Out the door we went in a flash. In next to no time, we were suited up, and investigating the swarm. It was one of the easiest of all swarms I have seen, less than a metre off the ground. Just pop in a box, have a cup of tea, pour some more bees in the box, Bob’s your Uncle. Put the box under the swarm…. And shake them in. Enter your comment here.

A Journey into the world of Beekeeping. December 28, 2016. That the queen is dead or gone. That the youngest bees were already a few weeks old. That it would take several more weeks before I could get fresh brood to hatch. No chance of quickly recovering it, without a spare queen and frames of brood. The orange hive is no more. You win some, you lose some. At least I didn’t let it get so weak that it was robbed out. Thankfully, poor Rogue One only lasted for a few days, before going to that happy little ...
