Playing in the Dirt | I'll never grow up but I will grow perennials

Playing in the Dirt is about having fun with horticulture. It is about the process more than the result. It is about finding and finding out. I work part-time at a garden center that sits just about smack-dab on the line between Zones 5 and 6 here in the Mid-Hudson Valley. Saying that I work…

Garlic | Playing in the Dirt

http://hudsonvalleygardener.com/2010/09/27/garlic

Playing in the Dirt. I'll never grow up but I will grow perennials. September 27, 2010. August 1, 2010 from a Facebook post. Sometimes I think I should have just hunkered down and taken the extra calculus I needed to transfer to Cornell but then I realize that if I had, I’d have a real job in horticulture with real responsibilities and. Would never do. As it is, I know enough to be dangerous* which is just enough to keep me playing in the dirt. So, to the garlic. And does it surprise you that I would?

Projects Gallery | Playing in the Dirt

http://hudsonvalleygardener.com/2010/10/07/projects-gallery

Playing in the Dirt. I'll never grow up but I will grow perennials. October 7, 2010. Much to the chagrin of everyone who lives with me, i am always in the middle of a million projects split evenly between indoors and out. This gallery represents some of my larger projects for the yard. I’ve thought of a couple of others since i started writing this but we’ll start with these four and I’ll add more as I have pictures of them. Trying to merge old and new walls. Lower corner of the yard.

Playing Catch-up | Playing in the Dirt

http://hudsonvalleygardener.com/2011/05/27/playing-catch-up

Playing in the Dirt. I'll never grow up but I will grow perennials. May 27, 2011. It is getting just a tad too hot out for me so I am going to try and get up to date here. Garlic report: Both of the test beds and the control are all doing well. Remember that I planted my half sprouting leftovers from the year before in July rather than composting them and then waiting to plant the best of the new crop in October as usual. About another month and I’ll know! From → Trial and Error. Larr; Catalog Season.

Geraniums, Family and Adolescent Aversions | Playing in the Dirt

http://hudsonvalleygardener.com/2010/10/23/geraniums-family-and-adolescent-aversions

Playing in the Dirt. I'll never grow up but I will grow perennials. Geraniums, Family and Adolescent Aversions. October 23, 2010. I have never been a big fan of the Common Geranium (Pelargonium x hortus). It isn’t their fault. It’s me. My family history predisposes me to dislike geraniums. Unfortunate adolescent experiences prejudiced me against geraniums. So, it is obvious that we can blame my mother and and my erstwhile boss, Gary, for my disdain of the poor Pelargonium. Poor Poor Pitiful Pelargoniums.

What. | Playing in the Dirt

http://hudsonvalleygardener.com/what-ive-planted-this-week

Playing in the Dirt. I'll never grow up but I will grow perennials. I’ve Planted this Week. Starting a gardening blog as the season is winding down was not the best planning but in the spring, I really don’t have the patience to sit inside and type when there are so many things to be done. The good news is that autumn is an excellent time for planting just about anything other than annuals. So I am just going to skip over all the stuff I’ve planted in the past three or four months. Pots from The Landscape.
