Join us for our 3rd Annual Hurlbutt Street Schoolhouse Open House on Sunday, October 4, 2015 from 1 pm until 4 pm. Did you ever wonder what the schoolhouse looks like? Do you remember visiting the schoolhouse and want to see it again? Would you like to see firsthand how the students were taught 100 years ago? Try out the quills and write a poem. See if you can add or subtract using the slate boards.

To become a teacher, a man or woman had to be able to read, write, and handle rough-and-ready students. Most teachers were men. They were called schoolmasters. Female teachers had to be single. Once a woman married, she was not allowed to continue teaching in the school. There was no such thing as a school bus in the early days. Children walked to school. HURLBUTT STREET SCHOOL HOUSE, INC. Today, the 1834 Hurlbutt Street School House, designated Wilton's Fourth Historic District and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, serves as a living museum where school children can visit for a day and learn the ways of earlier times. Almost 500 second grade students, from Wilton and Weston Elementary Schools, participate in our programs. They are coordinated and taught by volunteer parent school marms.

Many former students have said their whole lives were shaped by her gentle but firm, creative but practical inspiration. In 1929 a Ladies Auxiliary was formed, and, as a result, there were several progressive "firsts" in Wilton: first school to have a radio, weekly art instruction, playground equipment, dental clinic, hot lunch program, and visiting foreign students.
