I will lift up my eyes

Saturday, February 10, 2018. Adventures in French Cooking. Galettes de pomme de terre. Lapin a la moutarde. Next were the endives. These intriguing, lettuce like veggies started appearing at the market in late fall and everyone seemed to be buying them. I just had to know what made them special, so I did some digging and found a French cooking blog, in English, with an endive recipe. Endives au gratin was added to our dinner menu for the week and I was hooked. Wednesday, January 3, 2018. There they were,...

I will lift up my eyes: May 2015

http://iwillliftupmyeyes.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, May 9, 2015. Vignettes from My First Weeks on the Job. The room is crowded with 30 teachers, all sitting on small student chairs, hunched over low tables. There’s a buzz in the air, as they all work intently on their news articles. Two of our facilitators are leading a workshop on teaching writing in the elementary classroom, and now teachers are practicing a technique they’ll be encouraged to use in the classroom. As they finish their articles, they step to the front of the room. The facilitat...

Sunday, June 7, 2015. A different kind of culture shock. Milk in a bag (also, it doesn't need to be refrigerated before opening). I asked the girl working there if they had boxes to keep a bag of milk in once it was opened. She looked at me as if she had no idea what I was talking about. I explained a little more, "you know, so it doesn't spill when it's in the fridge after you open is". "Oh! I bought a one liter plastic pitcher with a lid. That seemed like a better solution to me). I love Jesus, love to...

I will lift up my eyes: Five Years. . .

http://iwillliftupmyeyes.blogspot.com/2014/07/five-years.html

Thursday, July 3, 2014. Five Years. . . Every year on July 3rd, I like to reflect on the past year. It might seem like a rather arbitrary date, but it's not. It's the day I left home 5 years ago and started this whole international living thing. On July 3rd last year, I gave my 2 weeks notice at the job I had in the States, preparing to leave for Finland. No wonder I've been feeling mentally and emotionally exhausted lately. Back in Latin America? I think what youre doing is fantastic! Enter your email a...

8220;Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the cause of orphans. Fight for the rights of widows.” Isaiah 1:17. Today… in bits and pieces. We make so many mistakes. All the time. 8220;It’s o.k. to make mistakes.” It’s what I always tell my kids. Lord cover our mistakes. Your love covers a multitude of sins. Your love makes up for practically anything. And so many with their moms, brothers, sisters, families. The church was packed. And children’s church even more so. 8221; He said.

Two in Taiwan: November 2010

http://twointaiwan.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, November 11, 2010. Despise not the day of the small thing. We've been working really hard here. All three of the younger kids are grade levels behind where they should be academically and sometimes that strikes fear into my heart. So this year we've really been working on English grammar, reading, phonics, reading comprehension, spelling etc. Hard work! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). After a much-longer-than expected adoption journey, we are finally a family of 9! Our two twelve year olds.

Saturday, February 05, 2011. HAPPY YEAR OF THE RABBIT! We had fun yesterday celebrating Chinese New Year. First we made egg rolls:. Then we made bubble tea:. Then we had a party with friends and family! Daniel is the only rabbit in our extended family. Cautious, kind, artistic, tender, sensitive-yes, soft spoken-not so much. Those others-we'll leave unmentioned ;-). Today we will go to the big Chinese Association New Year party and tomorrow we will celebrate at the Chinese church. Labels: Chinese New Year.

http://twointaiwan.blogspot.com/2011/06/on-hellos-goodbyes-and-water-buffalo.html

Saturday, June 18, 2011. On Hellos, Goodbyes and Water Buffalo Meat. I visited Annie in Bogota, Colombia this month! It was wonderful to see her, meet the wonderful team of people she is working with, and get to know a bit more about the ministry first hand. My favorite activity was teaching in the first grade class room. What a riot! They were so cute, so rambunctious and so hard to keep focused. But I loved their enthusiasm and it was fun to see them actually learning to read! At Oma, a cafe. And havin...

Saturday, December 24, 2011. Hi there- Annie posting! I haven't posted in awhile. I'm back from Colombia for a few weeks to spend Christmas with my family. I've been busy in Colombia, working at Luz y Vida, a school for at-risk kids in disadvantaged neighborhoods of Bogotá. Another thing I've been involved in is the Jungle. A company has offered us a $36,000 matching grant- for every dollar we raise, they will donate a dollar up to the $36,000. We're hoping to find 1000 donors who will give $36! 88pasche...

Tuesday, May 17, 2011. Come quickly Lord Jesus! This Sunday our pastor asked us what would change in our lives if we knew Jesus was coming soon- tomorrow, next month, in two years. . . He made a list of what that would mean to him and asked us to think about what it would mean to us. Here’s my list:. My sadness for the ‘bad’ in this life would be over. I would “dwell in the house of the Lord forever”. Those who are currently not ‘paying attention’ to the things of God would PAY ATTENTION. 8220;Everyone w...

Sunday, December 26, 2010. Reading the Christmas Story on Christmas Eve. A whirlwind of present opening. At church on Sunday. Saturday, December 25, 2010. All new for 2010! The Blakeslee annual (or semi annual or once in a while)Christmas letter now goes green. No more printing, no more stamps and envelopes, no more trying to fit pictures from a whole year on a 8x10 page. It must be the 21st century. Dana and I are well. We can not believe we are in our fifties! We hope Christmas and the New Year bring m...

I Will Lift My Eyes

I Will Lift My Eyes. Bravely Battling Opsoclonus-Myoclonus Syndrome and Neuroblastoma. Wednesday, November 3, 2010. A few days break will make a huge difference for us all. My foot is a little better (I sprained it really bad two weeks ago) it is TRUE what they say about sprains hurting more than breaks! The numbers came out today at our clinic (Aflac Cancer Center@CHOA) and 361 new cancer cases were diagnosed this year alone at just this clinic! Thanks for checking on my little guy.
