We love it when our friends come to the allotment and get grubby. Thanks for your help Ellie! Come Shine or Shine. So much for April showers, there really weren't any. We have been watering the allotment at least every 2 or 3 days (thanks Matt). We have been busy trying to plant out in any available space and keep on top of the mountain of vegetation that is appearing. Today we had our first BBQ at the allotment. Burgers, sausages and a salad made from our produce. Bliss. Ahhh the first ripe strawberry!

This is when we started planting the seeds in propagators. After some feedback from our fabulous friends at 'The Firs' (some plant specialists in the New Forest. watch this space) we realise our ethusiasm to get things going may be our downfall. We have not yet had the last frost and these fragile seedlings may suffer. Luckily there wasn't much in the greenhouse and we realised we really hadn't secured it down properly. The cover was found by our friendly neighbour. So the greenhouse lived to see another day! Successful seedlings from the propegators were transplanted into small pots, labelled with electrical tape and put in the greenhouse. Weather, please be kind. The gardeners delight tomatoes purchased from Dobies are growing really well and had a 100% hit rate.

Our story begins in summer 2010, when we acquired the allotment plot, which had been anticipated for over three years. It is here that our battle with nature began. The allotment had been left unused over winter and spring, and some local homeless folk liked the plot so much they decided to set up home there. We couldn't blame them really, but neatly packed up their things, left a NO SLEEP :( sign and padlocked the door. They kindly kicked it in.

We finally got the potatoes in! We dug trenches about 70cm apart, de-stoned and de-rooted the soil, added some manure to the bottom of the trench and put in the potatoes covering them with 10cm of loose soil. As the green foliage appears, we will cover the potato plants with more earth this encourages tuber growth on more of the plant. Allotmentgirl has decided to grow flowers on the plot. So a flower bed was dug out, the soil de-rooted. So we are planning a vineyard!

It's tropical here in London, there hasn't been any rain, temperatures are in the 20's (centigrade) and watering is high on the list of priorities. The allotment is loving it, and all the plants are looking good, despite a little slug damage. We are trying to keep the slugs off using egg shells. Everything is growing fast, and the cucumber and melons will need potting on soon. Now to build the tomato house.

Allotmentboys started off on the patio in a West London 3 boy houseshare. Large troughs and soil were bought and strawberrys were planted in the hanging baskets. Three tomatoes plants (half dead and reduced), bought from homebase were planted in the troughs. Another trough was filled with garlic (from tesco's) and onion seedlings (from homebase). The last trough had 4 courgette plants, grown from seed. Hanging baskets were used to maximise the productivity in a small space. For the 10 challenge.

Wandsworth Council have made a community garden for the residents of the Wendelsworth Estate. Upon seeing the letter, I got in touch and expressed my interest. The outcome was an invitation to become a volunteer for Garden Organic. Allotmentgirl was sent on a Master Gardening Course. The weekend course, funded by Garden Organic. Was fantastic. They gave me lots of free stuff, seed's, books, leaflets, a kitchen garden planner, but above that, they provided insight in how to get people involved.

The main crop potatoes were planted in trenches. The main crop spuds we chose were seed potatoes from Dobies. See our Best Bits. For a detailed instructional video. And F1 Red Pearl. Onions that we have grown in a propagator from seed are ready to be planted out, so we have transplanted these next to the onion sets that our lovely neighbours at the allotment gave to us, for comparison. Before doing the is the soil was dug, de-weeded and de-stoned. The nasty white root we have on our plot is Bind Weed.
