It Takes a Village to Raise an Idiot. People tell me I’m crazy, running a full marathon with only 10 weeks of running in my legs. Yet every one of them is supporting me. They see how good it is for me. They see me happy, refreshed, etc. More importantly, not depressed, fatigued, stressed, isolated…. I’ll let you know how the efforts go. As I start running, I realize I do carry (at least) these seven layers I could stand to shed:. 1 – Doubt. 2 – Anger. 3 – Grief. 4 – Depression. 5 – History (as I am going to call it). 6 – PTSD. 7 – Incredible Good Looks. The only way to the end of a marathon is through yourself. That route takes me through some nasty terrain. Zero to 26.2 in 10 Weeks. It’s addictive, it really is. Once the experience has settled, I wondered how I would feel if, like many around me at the finish line, the question “can I do this? 8221; was answered. That would require an undertaking of suitable difficulty to have the answer go either way. Let me be honest. I experienced Post Traumatic Stress Disorder before people were really aware of it. I slipped through the cracks that form around the label “Nervous Breakdown” and have lost almost half my life to the struggle. In running I find the silence and solitude I need to heal.
