November 22, 2004. One of the songs that my mother sang to me and Melanie when we were children began with these lines:. Asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower/ Dandelion greens and escarole/ Fennel and grapes and honeydew melon/ And iceberg lettuce for the salad bowl. As you will have surmised, the song went on to name a vegetable, fruit or herb for each letter of the alphabet, with a few stretches, such as. Un-ions, sweet like strawberries. In Pennsylvania, anything grows. A small family-owned farm in the Gr...

Feline Friday: Do cats smile? | Music and Cats

Feline Friday: Do cats smile? October 20, 2006. Everyone knows that dogs smile; there’s no mistaking their happy, tongue-lolling grins. But do cats smile? Before Sasha came to live with us, I might have argued that they don’t. But I’d be willing to bet that’s a smile on Sasha’s face. And who can blame him? A soft, just-washed blanket folded over a warm radiator is about the perfect spot for a McKitten on a chilly fall evening. And the Carnival of the Cats (hosted by Laurence Simon’s Catcall. That’s...

The summer of snow peas. August 28, 2010. I told Paul that June was too late to plant snow peas. Not that we could have planted them sooner; we had put together the two new raised beds in our front yard. In May, and finally had them filled with topsoil and compost in early June.). And while my tomatoes and tomatillos shivered in their bed, those peas germinated, and the tiny plants pushed their first leaves up. 8212; tiny peas appeared from within the wilting flowers. Local Roots CSA Week 12. August 25, 2010. This week’s Local Roots CSA box brought us:. Bunch of baby bok choi. Several cucumbers (including the lemon ones that I love). And, finally (by which I mean at long last)…. One very large heirloom tomato. Local Roots CSA Week 11. August 17, 2010. In the Local Roots CSA box waiting on my front porch this afternoon I found:. Bunch of pretty purple radishes. Bag of mixed salad greens. Several small round cucumbers. One long green cucumber. Two large yellow zucchini.

A blog of my own. August 1, 2004. For the past 6 months, my husband and I have kept a daily blog about his second battle with cancer. (He’s winning so far; I’ll write more about that later.) At this point, I’ve decided that I want, in a manner of speaking, a room of my own. I need a place to write about. Of my feelings. I’m tired of tailoring my writing so as not to offend our extended family. So, I’m starting this blog. On To find the light in everyone. On Day 7: Personal penguins. A very fine house.

A very fine house. Kitchen Transformation: Some old we wish we could keep. July 22, 2006. We were happy to see almost all of our old kitchen go. The shoddy cabinets, the disfunctional appliances, the dropped ceiling; good riddance to every bit. Turns out my assessment was terribly, terribly wrong. I had pried up the only relatively loose corner of underlayment in the entire kitchen. The rest of the particleboard sheets were glued to the fir floor around all their edges, nailed (with framing nails! When o...

March 2, 2015. Order matters. This is true for massive, complex projects like launching something into space (see: launch sequence. And it is also true for small, simple things like baking. Across the board, when you get things out of order there can be devastating consequences. 2 Timothy 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. The verse does not read, Entrust to able men who will be faithful. No dou...

A walk with a friend. January 29, 2018. 1 Comment ↓. Running races was, momentarily, my measure of truth. My way of keeping time to the beat of cardiac health. It was…. But back to the conversation with Doug about taking a walk. While my race running metronome had gone still, I could almost sense another one taking form in the background. What if I tried something I’d never done before again? Like a 7-day hike in a well-known National Park area? Yet there’s a reality here as well, hiking is not. Camping&...
