A Connecticut Yankee in Robert E. Lee's Back Yard: July 2014
http://yankinyard.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
A Connecticut Yankee in Robert E. Lee's Back Yard. Sunday, July 20, 2014. Up, Up and Away! Home there when I was growing up there. I also remember reading Anne Morrow Lindbergh's diaries while I was in high school. It tries to dispel the romantic images that make up our current cultural memory of World War I. The reality was a far cry from Snoopy and the Red Baron! It could be a spider," the boy said. Absolutely perfect. One entire floor of the museum was closed for renovation, and the exhibits a...I'm n...

Who knew I'd become so much of an outdoor person! I still sit with a good book an play the flute, but I've really been enjoying exploring the marshes and the trails in parks around the metro DC area. A Connecticut Yankee in Robert E. Lee's Back Yard: May 2014
http://yankinyard.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
A Connecticut Yankee in Robert E. Lee's Back Yard. Sunday, May 18, 2014. A River Runs Through It. We could hear the river as soon as we got out of the car, and this is the falls looked like when we got to the overlooks. You read descriptions of raging rivers, and you see the video that accompanies news reports, but nothing really prepares you for actually seeing it in person. And this is about as close as I care to get to a raging river! A small oasis of calm in the rocks of one of the observation areas.

A Connecticut Yankee in Robert E. Lee's Back Yard: January 2013
http://yankinyard.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
A Connecticut Yankee in Robert E. Lee's Back Yard. Tuesday, January 29, 2013. Three days in the Albuquerque area and we know our way around pretty well, only occasionally needing Marsha, Kellee's GPS. I'm not sure why we have this need to name the disembodied voices on our electronic gadgets. Does it make us feel less dominated by our technology? Or do we name it because it speaks? We're transitioning from play time to work time. Forma Board members and conference participants arrived throughout the ...

A Connecticut Yankee in Robert E. Lee's Back Yard. Sunday, June 22, 2014. A short while later we came upon the tree pictured to the left. Believe it or not, it's a Sequoia. Thee little tea bag looking things sitting on the soil in the pots are release fertilizer each time the plant is watered. In 1958 they removed several of the original sandstone columns from the Capitol to make way for an addition to the building. They used marble for the new columns, and the originals eventually found a new home i...

A Connecticut Yankee in Robert E. Lee's Back Yard. Sunday, July 13, 2014. I don't have to tell you where we had brunch today. The way the museum is designed is as much about contemplation and reflection as it is about seeing and learning. As we walked back to the car we decided to stop at the United States Botanical Garden, which was literally across the street from where we'd parked, We just did a fairly quick walk through, and I do want to go back. But not during the summer. It's not really a p...Zen a...

A Connecticut Yankee in Robert E. Lee's Back Yard. Wednesday, May 1, 2013. Eighteen months ago the possibility of working at Virginia Theological Seminary wasn't even a blip on the radar screen. Even though one of the first things I said when management eliminated my position at the Church Center was "Relocation is an option," the DC area wasn't even on the long list of possibilities. Yet here I am celebrating my first anniversary as VTS' Hospitality and Guest Residence Manager. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

A Connecticut Yankee in Robert E. Lee's Back Yard: The Yankee Begins Another Academic Year
http://yankinyard.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-yankee-begins-another-academic-year.html
A Connecticut Yankee in Robert E. Lee's Back Yard. Monday, August 10, 2015. The Yankee Begins Another Academic Year. I moved down here a little over three years ago, and it still surprises me to see Virginia plates on my car. This August marks the beginning of the fourth academic year since I started the job, my second as a student. After the years it took to get out of the mindset of an academic year, it did not take me long to get back into the rhythm of it. And so begins another year.
