Maria C. McCarthy. The Word from the Shed. Rip it up and start again. Research or a notebook obsession? My mother was not one for respecting privacy, so I kept my diary with me at all times, and slept with it under my pillow. No one read it but me. I was out with a friend when I saw a notebook I liked. It was A5 spiral bound with a picture of a parrot on the cover. ‘Let me get that for you,’ she said, and out of nowhere, I started writing poetry in that book, and keeping a diary. The paper filled a build...

There is usually some discussion, argument, sorting out of stuff – who owns the CDs, who gets custody of children and pets, a splitting of finances. But what about friendships? Were those things we had in common harmful?

Poem Story Dream Reality. Leicester Writers’ Club. Monday January 20th 2014 Shindig! January 22, 2014. This slideshow requires JavaScript. For me, this first Shindig! Of 2014 was a little different because I had been asked by Jonathan Taylor of Crystal Clear Creators to be one of their two featured poets, reading alongside Cathy Grinrod. Maria C. McCarthy. The Word from the Shed. Walking, walking; writing, writing. On a cold Valentine’s evening, in a room above a pub where the old sash windows didn’t quite close, I heard Katherine Pierpoint and John Gallas read poetry. The week before, I went to the University of Kent to hear Katharine Norbury read from. Her superb memoir, which was one of my favourite reads of 2015. What links all three, and got me thinking, is that travelling inspires their writing. The Alphabet of Ugly Animals. I used...

Maria C. McCarthy. The Word from the Shed. Nostalgia – a longing for a past that is not our own. 8220;I heard the news today, oh boy…” of the death of George Martin. The cacophony at the end of The Beatles’ ‘A Day in the Life’ is magnificent, and I was hoping to hear that; the track that BBC 6 Music chose to play first, though, was ‘In My Life’, a nostalgic song. Memorandum: Poems for the Fallen. There is a photograph that sits on the cover of my cousin’s pamphlet,. A Long Long Way. I must confess to wat...
